Eligibility update on USA Wrestling Women’s Collegiate Club Nationals set for March 5
by Richard Immel, USA Wrestling
USA Wrestling established the Women’s Collegiate Club Nationals this year in an effort to expand national competition opportunities at the college level for women and support additional opportunities for women leaders in the sport, such as coaches and officials.
The tournament will continue as planned on March 5 in North Liberty, Iowa, one day before the historic first NCAA Women’s Wrestling Championships being held down the road in Coralville, Iowa. However, USA Wrestling has been informed by the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) that its member club programs are not eligible to compete in this event and remain in good standing with the NCWA.
The competition remains open to all female student-athletes who participate in club wrestling at a collegiate institution at any level that does not currently field a varsity program in the NCAA or NAIA divisions. USA Wrestling intends to work with the NCWA in good faith to explore options that enable NCWA programs to participate in next year’s Women’s Collegiate Club Nationals.
The Women’s Collegiate Club Nationals aligns directly with USA Wrestling’s goal to sustain the growth of women’s wrestling nationwide and provide development opportunities for women in the sport. One such opportunity stemming from this event is every champion in the high-performance division being invited to participate in a U.S. National Team training camp held at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
