ZAGREB, Croatia – Mr. consistent Kyle Snyder was steady as ever in two wins on Monday morning at the 2025 World Championships. Snyder earned a spot in the 97 kg semifinals and is a win away from capturing his eighth-straight World Championships medal dating back to 2015.
Snyder, a 2016 Olympic champion and two-time Olympic medalist, shut out his first two opponents with relative ease, going 10-0 over three-time Pan American medalist Cristian Sarco Colmenarez of Venezuela and 5-0 on 2024 Olympian Zbigniew Baranowski of Poland.
Up next for Snyder is Asian champion Arash Yoshida of Japan, who has been equally as dominant thus far. The semifinal is a rematch from the 2025 Muhamet Malo Ranking Series tournament held in February, which was won by Yoshida, on criteria, 5-5.
Two-time age-group World medalist David Carr moved into the 74 kg bronze medal match with a dominant 10-0 win over Tugsjargal Erdenebat of Mongolia in the repechage. Carr is a win away from securing his first Senior-level medal. To do so, he will have to go through 2020 Olympic champion and three-time World champion Zaurbek Sidakov of UWW.
Three Americans were defeated in preliminary action—Real Woods at 65 kg in men’s freestyle, plus Cristelle Rodriguez at 55 kg and Jacarra Winchester at 59 kg in women’s freestyle. Woods and Rodriguez still have repechage hopes entering tonight’s semifinals.
Woods impressed in his opener against 2024 Olympian Maxim Sacultan of Moldova, exploding to a 14-4 technical fall. He was stifled in the round-of-16 by 2024 Olympic silver medalist and 2022 World champion Rahman Amouzadkhalili of Iran, 12-1.
The 0-2 start was less than ideal for the U.S. women to begin the week in Zagreb. Rodriguez, a 2024 U20 World champion, gave up a pivotal four-point counter in a 6-3 loss to Andreea Ana of Romania, who is a six-time age-group World medalist and two-time Olympian. Winchester, a 2019 world champion, was pinned in a near-side cradle by 2023 U20 World bronze Xuejing Liang of China. Liang dropped her next match, taking Winchester out of the tournament.
