DES MOINES, Iowa - USA Wrestling crowned 15 champions in the 9-10 Grade Boys division on Friday afternoon at the 2025 Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals held at Iowa Events Center.
Among them were lightweight wrestlers Ty Martin at 100 and Alex Hall at 106, Dylan Nieuwenhuis at 113, Oliver Pulliam at 120, Lewis Davis at 126 and Vinny Ferrari at 132.
Middleweight champions included Illia Kyryianenko at 138, Quincey Crawford at 144, Diesel Pedersen at 150, Thunder Page at 157 and Cole Sackett at 165.
Easton Kammerud led the latter third of the finals securing the national championship at 175. Rounding out the champions were Maximus Purdy at 190, Kade Splinter at 215 and Sawyer Schendel at 285.
The initial matchup of the 9-10th grade boys preseason national finals featured Brady Genard out of Pennsylvania and Iowa native Ty Martin.
The opener was the first final to reach sudden victory at 4-1 after a 1-1 standstill through the first three periods. Martin’s takedown in the early stages of overtime cemented his name as the national champion at 100 pounds.
“You gotta take them down in overtime,” Martin said. “Feels good, and I feel like I proved a lot to myself knowing that I can beat anyone.”
Ahead of the championship match at 106, Hoeft narrowly escaped Alejandro De La Rosa in the semifinals, 7-5. Hoeft was unsuccessful against Hall as Hall claimed the title in a 7-1 frenzy.
Hall narrowly escaped the semifinal round 1-0 over Kaemen Orine. Hall led the entire way in the finals, stepping off the mat with a black eye on the right side of his face.
“This match was one of my better ones,” Hall said. “I was able to get to my attacks, make my takedowns, and my face says it all.”
After a second-place finish last season, Nieuwenhuis kept his eyes on the title and redeemed himself in a narrow 5-3 decision over Andres Lopez.
Lopez entered the match with three successful falls on the day but was unable torepeat his success after a late takedown by Nieuwenhuis. Towards the end of the third, Nieuwenhuis found himself struggling to find his footing, but turned things around to get the job done.
“I didn’t want to put myself in a bad position,” Nieuwenhuis said. “Keeping myself in a good position and grinding out matches is [the goal].”
120-pound national champion and Texas native Ollie Pulliam exited the final match winning the first 10-1 major decision of the finals, but also with a freshly opened wound in the center of his head.
After splitting his head open in the preliminary rounds, Pulliam remained composed and wrestled like his life depended on it. Trainers intervened three times before the third period.
“I had to clean [my head] up after my second match because it split open,” Pulliam said. “I just want to keep scoring points and have fun.”
Lewis Davis claimed the title at 126 with a pair of takedowns and the will to overcome a dominant Eli Edfors. Edfors entered the match with two falls and two technical falls on the day, the second coming in 1:31.
“Give all the credit to my coaches,” Davis said. “A commitment to tough wrestling really pays off.”
It was Vinny Ferrari taking the crown at 132 after overcoming a 3-0 deficit, flipping the script and scrapping out a 9-4 tiebreaker victory.
Ferrari was successful in landing four back points, extending his late 5-4 lead to 9-4 at the end of regulation.
“I stayed in the moment and out of my head,” Ferrari said. “Even if I’m trailing, it’s just about going out there and finding a way to win.”
After advancing to the semifinals on respective 6-4 decisions, Wickam and Kyryianenko battled out a 10-4 decision that ended in a win for Kyryianenko.
Kyryianenko led the majority of the early stages, pulling away in the third with a takedown.
“I’m thankful to everyone who’s gotten me to this point,” Kyryianenko said. “I’m thankful for the experience and to my opponent.
After reaching the finals by way of a 4-2 decision, Crawford recorded the second major decision final 10-2 over Coachella Valley’s Luke Cline.
Crawford remained excited after securing the title and leading the entire bout.
“There was a lot of tough, good competition,” Crawford said. “It feels great after the time spent training for it.”
Diesel Pedersen claimed the 150-pound preseason national title after managing three first-period takedowns against Sterling. An escape plus another takedown secured the win in the third for Pedersen.
“I’ve been thinking about this title for a long time,” Pedersen said. “Just glad I finally made it happen.”
Thunder Page took down Allen Diaz in a 20-4 technical fall, the largest margin of victory of the entire 9-10 grade finals. A review of a called fall overturned an initial decision before the match ended in favor of Page.
“I always expect to win,” Page said. “The game plan is always to score points, keep your foot on the gas and continue to climb the national rankings.”
Cole Sackett erased any doubt with a 13-6 decision win over Hubert Szymko. Sackett credited his underhooks falling just short of a technical fall.
“I don’t like scouting my opponents,” Sackett said. “Whenever I scout, it makes me nervous, and I don’t wrestle my best.”
Wisconsin native Easton Kammerud recorded the first fall of the finals over Destan Skelly. Skelly fell behind early, eventually running out of gas and finding himself on his back at the start of the third.
“I was just trying to have fun with it,” Kammerud said. “I wanted the points, but it is what it is.”
Illinois native Maximus Purdy followed the trend of major decisions at 190, claiming his first title at preseason nationals over Rosco Lewis. Lewis was held scoreless through three periods for the first time all tournament.
“I came in with a gameplan to takedown and ride,” Purdy said. “There was a job to do, and I got it done thanks to [my coaches].”
Wisconsin’s Kade Splinter recorded the fastest pin of the championship bouts at just 18-seconds over Steven Gomez III. Splinter’s pin was the second fastest of the tournament.
“I expected to win,” Splinter said. “I have to work on a lot of things, really just from the ground up.”
A 2-1 dogfight rounded out the 9-10th grade position of the tournament with Schendel prevailing in the third on a penalty.
“I just kept grinding,” Schendel said. “[You] definitely just have to keep the pressure up and keep the pace. [I kept] working towards it.”
