IOWA CITY, Iowa — The third-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team shut out No. 19 Pittsburgh, 36-0, on Friday night on Mediacom Mat at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes had 27 takedowns to the Panthers’ two, outscoring Pitt 99-32 in total match points.

Seventh-ranked Dean Peterson started the dual at 125 pounds, winning a 4-1 decision over Tyler Chappell with the only takedown of the match in sudden victory.

At 133 pounds, No. 3 Drake Ayala earned Iowa’s first bonus points, using four takedowns to defeat No. 32 Evan Tallmadge by major decision, 13-4.

Nasir Bailey picked up a 4-2 decision at 141 pounds over Anthony Santaniello, making it three straight Hawkeye wins.

No. 10 Ryder Block added bonus points at 149 pounds, defeating Kade Brown 12-2.

At 165 pounds, No. 3 Michael Caliendo recorded a technical fall in 5:29 over No. 25 Dylan Evans, 22-6, using seven takedowns.

Patrick Kennedy won the night’s first blood-round rematch at 174 pounds, defeating No. 14 Luca Augustine by major decision, 11-2.

Gabe Arnold made his season debut at 184 pounds, earning a 15-5 major decision over Chase Kranitz.

In the marquee matchup at 197 pounds, No. 8 Massoma Endene trailed 4-2 before scoring a takedown on the edge with four seconds remaining to upset No. 4 Mac Stout, 5-4.

“Just keep looking to score points,” Endene said. “Believe that I can keep going forward, looking for different opportunities. Of course, it is not ideal to get taken down in the first 10-20 seconds. Score fast, keep scoring, and keep looking to score points. That’s what we talk about in the room. It’s not really like, ‘Oh, I got taken down, now it’s time to put my head on the mat.’ It’s pop right back up and look for a different opportunity. It took me a while to get that other opportunity, but that is what it is about.”

Ben Kueter closed out the dual at heavyweight, winning 2-0 in another blood-round rematch over No. 12 Dayton Pitzer.
