CORNWALL-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. (Nov. 13, 2025) — New York Military Academy (NYMA) has taken a major step forward in strengthening one of the nation’s elite prep wrestling programs with the opening of a brand-new, state-of-the-art wrestling room.

The purpose-built training environment will support the NYMA Knights 2025 wrestling team, currently ranked #5 in the nation, by providing a single-use, high-performance venue for conditioning, technical training, strategy sessions, and team development.

The new facility represents a significant investment in NYMA’s athletic infrastructure and will also serve as a future hub for regional wrestling clubs, training camps, clinics, and youth development programs beginning later this year.

“This new training facility raises the bar for our entire campus,” said Sunny Doman , NYMA’s Head of School. “It reflects our mission—and our promise—to continually improve NYMA’s physical plant in ways that directly strengthen our four pillars: Academics, Character, Leadership, and Athletics. Creating a dedicated space for our cadet-athletes sends a clear message about our commitment to excellence and to investing in opportunities that help our students push their potential.”

“Our cadets are talented, disciplined, and hungry,” said Justin LoPresti ’06 , NYMA’s Head Wrestling Coach. “This room lets us hone a sharper edge. Having a dedicated wrestling space, not shared with another sport or activity, allows us to train with precision, prepare with focus, and build the culture that a high-performance team demands. This facility elevates everything we do.”

To mark the opening, NYMA welcomed home distinguished alumnus and wrestling legend Ted Levine ’64 , a former Knights wrestler and Fairleigh Dickinson University Hall of Fame coach.

“This facility is exactly the kind of investment that changes programs and changes lives,” said Levine. “At NYMA, wrestling shaped my discipline and determination. Seeing the Academy build a space like this for today’s cadets is inspiring. It tells these young athletes that their hard work matters and that NYMA believes in their potential.”

Levine was one of FDU’s most accomplished wrestlers and coaches: a Metropolitan Champion at 115 lbs, two-time NCAA qualifier, U.S. National Champion, and a member of the silver-medal U.S. Maccabiah Games team. After his competitive career, he coached at FDU until 1988, earning Co-Metropolitan Coach of the Year honors. He was inducted into the FDU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000 and NYMA’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007.

Coming off a breakout 2024–25 season that saw NYMA finish 7th at the National Prep Tournament and compete alongside national powerhouses such as Blair Academy, Wyoming Seminary, and Lake Highland Prep, finishing the season with a National Champion in the form of Oumar Tounkara ‘25 at 126 lbs.

The program enters the 2025 season with significant momentum. The team returned multiple state champions and National Prep All-Americans, strengthened by a rigorous national schedule that included elite events like Super 32 and Beast of the East. What began in 2017 as a five-wrestler squad has evolved into a nationally recognized program attracting top-tier recruits, including multi-time state champions and NHSCA All-Americans, positioning NYMA wrestling firmly among the rising elite in prep athletics.

Founded in 1889, New York Military Academy is a private, college-preparatory, co-educational boarding and day school for grades 9–12 and post-graduates. Located in Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, NYMA’s mission is to develop cadets in mind, body, and character, preparing them for higher education and responsible citizenship. NYMA’s vision is to be the nation’s premier college-prep school incorporating military organization, mentorship, and tradition to cultivate confident, capable, and service-oriented graduates.
