Pennsylvania wins 16U boys freestyle title with four champions; Rutlin named Outstanding Wrestler
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
FARGO, N.D. – Pennsylvania continued its week of dominance by claiming four individual titles and handily winning the team title in the 16U boys freestyle division of the 2025 U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals on Wednesday night.
Individual 16U boys freestyle national champions from Pennsylvania were Leo Murillo (88), Kooper Deputy (100), Jayden O'Farril (175) and Mario Hutcherson (190). Three of the four Pennsylvania champions won their gold-medal match by technical fall, Murrillo, Deputy and Hutcherson.
Murillo blitzed 2024 14U Nationals champion Johnathan Thompson of Iowa in the finals, 11-0 in 1:23. Murillo had four technical falls, a pin and a decision on the way to his title.
Deputy defeated his Pennsylvania teammate Jack Stonebreaker, 10-0 in 1:10. Deputy had five technical falls and a decision on his run to the title.
O’Farril won a tight 6-5 victory over top seed Salah Tsarni of Maryland. O’Farril opened the match with a four-point takedown and was holding criteria in a 5-5 match going into the final seconds. The referee called O’Farril for a step out with three seconds to go. The Pennsylvania coaches won the challenge on the call, with the jury ruling that O’Farril did not step out, giving him the final point.
Hutcherson got his offense rolling in his 10-0 technical fall of Caden Krueger of Michigan in the finals. Hutcherson scored eight of his points in the second period. Hutcherson scored technical falls in six of his seven matches.
Claiming the Outstanding Wrestler Award in the 16U boys freestyle division was Colin Rutlin of Missouri, who scored a 10-0 technical fall over Dylan Villers of Tennessee in 2:46 at 150 pounds. Rutlin led 8-0 at the break and closed it out with two second-period points. Rutlin scored all seven of his matches by technical fall. Rutlin was fourth in last year’s 16U Nationals in freestyle.
There were no returning 16U Nationals champions entered in the tournament, and all three returning 16U Nationals runners-up failed to reach the finals again. Deputy was one of three 2024 16U Nationals freestyle third-place finishers who returned to Fargo to win this year’s 16U Nationals, along with Thiago Silva of California (106), Camryn Howard of New York (157).
Silva scored an impressive 12-2 technical fall over William Soto of New York in the finals in a battle of returning All-Americans. Silva was fifth at 94 pounds last year, while Soto was sixth at 100 pounds. The 105-pound weight class had the most returning 16U National freestyle All-Americans with six. Silva beat another returning All-American in the semifinals, Traevon Ducking of Indiana, 5-4.
Howard scored a 5-0 shut out over Asher Bacon of Pennsylvania in the finals. Howard scored four of his points in the second period.
The 16U Nationals in boys freestyle was the second leg of the 16U Triple Crown. Ceasar Salas of Indiana was the only wrestler entering the freestyle finals who was still eligible for the Triple Crown, and he was defeated in the 215-pound finals by Satoshi Davis of California, 9-4. Davis led 6-0, but Salas scored a big four-point move to close it to 6-1. Davis scored the last three points of the match to seal the win.
California had a second champion, when Noah Larios scored a 7-2 victory over Joe Constable of Iowa at 285 pounds. The bout was tied at 2-2 at the break, but Larios was dominant in the second period, winning key positions and scoring five more points.
Sean Kenny of New Jersey completed an impressive run at 113 pounds with an 11-1 technical fall over Oliver Pulliam of Texas in the finals. Five of his seven matches were technical falls. In a battle of returning All-Americans, Kenny scored a clutch 3-3 win over Chase Karenbauer in the quarterfinals.
Trailing 2-1 as time ran out, Tommy Wurster of Ohio scored a takedown on the closing buzzer to defeat Mateo Gallegos of Pennsylvania, 4-2 at 120 pounds. Pennsylvania challenged the call, which was denied, giving Wurster his final point.
Angel Cejudo, Jr. of Arizona claimed the 132-pound title with a 5-2 decision over Finnegan O'Brien of New York at 132 pounds. Cejudo trailed 2-1 at the break, then scored the only four points of the second period. Cejudo’s father Angel Cejudo, Sr., who was in his corner, was a 16U Nationals runner-up, also for Arizona in 2001, and was also a two-time Fargo Greco-Roman champion.
At 144 pounds, Peyton Hornby of Indiana had a powerful second period, edging Lincoln Robideaux of Minnesota, 8-6. Robideaux led 4-0 at the break, but Hornby hit a four-point throw as part of an eight-point scoring spree in the second period.
Other individual champions were Miro Parr-Coffin of Washington (94), Miklo Hernandez of Minnesota (126), Jovani Solis of Florida (138) and Ethan Sonne of Illinois (165).
Parr-Coffin scored a clutch 3-2 decision over Carter Smith of Ohio, 3-2. Hernandez was in command in a 7-0 shutout victory over Tommy Marchetti of New Jersey. Solis handled Landyn Shaffer of New York, 6-1. Sonne won a wide-open back and forth battle with Chris Anguiano of California, 10-8.
