The U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals in women’s freestyle will cover all the mats on the floor of the FargoDome on Saturday. Both tournaments will go advance through the round of 16 on Saturday night. We should know the quarterfinalists at the end of the evening session.

Weigh-ins are over and the brackets are posted live on USA Bracketing

The schedule is structured differently this year. Session I will be for Junior Girls only starting at 8:00 a.m. and Session II will be for 16U Girls only, starting at 3:30 p.m.

Here is a data-driven preview of each tournament separately below. This year’s USMC Junior Nationals in Fargo will be the largest female wrestling tournament ever in the United States, and perhaps in world history. The total number of girls competing in Fargo this weekend is 2,246, with 1,217 in the Junior division and 1,028 in the 16U division.

When closely reviewing the brackets, please note that many of the athletes are competing in different weight classes than where they registered. Many went up, a few went down in weight.

No. 2 Pound-For-Pound Fernandez is doubling up

Freshman Taina Fernandez, the No. 2 Pound-For-Pound wrestler in the nation, is eligible to compete at the U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals for the first time. She comes into Fargo as a U17 World champion. Not one to shy away from a challenge, Fernandez has decided to compete in both divisions this weekend, entered at 135 pounds in both the 16U division and the Junior division. As a freshman who is 16 years old, she is eligible for both. Based on the PIN rankings, she drew the No. 1 seed position in both brackets. Can she pull off a double title, something that has not been done since the Junior and 16U were rescheduled to compete on the same days? How many matches will Taina wrestle in the next two days? It will be fun to watch.
