What to watch: Week 14 of the college wrestling season

It’s the 14th week of this college wrestling season, and it’s time of one of the most highly anticipated duals of the year. Penn State and Iowa are set for a Friday night Big Ten Battle in the Bryce Jordan Center, 28 premier women’s wrestling programs head to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Grand View Open, and the season continues.

No. 1 Penn State vs. No. 2 Iowa

Date: Friday, January 31

Time: 7 p.m. ET

Location: State College, Pa./Bryce Jordan Center

Where to watch: B1G Network

The dual of the week is finally here. Iowa travels east to State College on Friday to match up against the Nittany Lions at 7 p.m. Penn State has ten ranked wrestlers in its lineup, all in the top ten, in No. 9 Luke Lilledahl (125), No. 7 Braeden Davis (133), No. 3 Beau Bartlett (141), No. 3 Shayne Van Ness (149), No. 3 Tyler Kasak (157), No. 1 Mitchell Mesenbrink (165), No. 2 Levi Haines (174), No. 1 Carter Starocci (184), No. 4 Josh Barr (197), and No. 2 Greg Kerkvliet (285). Both programs are currently 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten. This is one of the most anticipated duals of the year, and fans will get to see top five matchups at 149, 157, 165, 184 and 197 pounds.

NC State heads to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to take on the Tar Heels on Friday night. The Wolfpack holds an overall record of 9-1 and a 3-0 record in the ACC. North Carolina also enters with an undefeated ACC record, and is 6-4 overall. NC State won last season’s match up 33-6, and this will be the 120th all-time meeting between the two programs.

Twenty-eight top women’s wrestling teams are slated to compete at the Grand View Open on Saturday. The event features nine NCAA teams, including Carthage, Fort Hays State, Iowa, McKendree, Minot State, Quincy, Simpson, Sioux Falls, and Upper Iowa, as well as 19 NAIA women’s wrestling teams, such as Avila, Baker, Central Christian, Cumberlands, Dickinson State, Friends, Grand View, Jamestown, Midland, Missouri Baptist, Missouri Valley, Morningside, Oklahoma City, Texas Wesleyan, Waldorf, Wayland Baptist, William Penn, William Woods, and York. The event is hosted by Grand View, and the action kicks off at 9 a.m. local time in Des Moines.
