VARNA, Bulgaria – Team USA scored five medals in men’s freestyle on Friday at the 2025 Dan Kolov – Nikola Petrov International—2021 World silver medalist Daton Fix and 2017 U17 World champion Will Lewan were gold medal winners.

Fix and fellow American Devan Turner competed in the 61 kg finals to kick off the men’s freestyle medal round at Palace of Culture and Sports in Varna, Bulgaria. Fix got on the board first with a shot clock point nearly two minutes into the match. He added a step out point, plus a point for fleeing, from an underhook drive off the mat. The second period was a controlled hand fight that kept the score at 3-0 in favor of Fix.

Although he has competed sparingly overseas, this gold medal for Fix is his third-straight since he competed at the 2021 Senior Worlds, keeping his international undefeated streak intact. He earned tournament titles at the 2022 Pan American Championships and 2023 Waclaw Ziolkowski Memorial prior to this weekend. Fix is a two-time Senior World Team member and four-time age-group World medalist for Team USA.

Donning the silver medal, Turner finished with his second podium finish at an international event. He was a bronze medalist at last year’s Bill Farrell Memorial International and a NCAA Division I standout at Oregon State.

Lewan controlled the 70 kg gold medal match against 2022 U17 European champion Kaloyan Atanasov of Bulgaria. He picked up a shot clock point and a pair of takedowns to get a comfortable 5-0 decision.

It was just the third international event for Lewan, and second on the Senior level. He recently earned a silver medal at the Bill Farrell Memorial International. Lewan was a two-time NCAA All-American for Michigan.

In the 79 kg gold medal match, Kennedy Monday dropped a back-and-forth decision to Tornike Tulashvili of Georgia, 8-6. Monday led 2-0 at the break with two step-out points on the board. The pivotal sequence came late in the second frame with Monday surrendering three leg laces from par terre after leading 4-2, which put the match out of reach.

With a silver medal from Bulgaria in tow, Monday is now four-for-four on international medals since jumping onto the Senior level scene last summer. He scored gold at the Grand Prix of Spain and Henri Deglane Grand Prix, plus silver at the Bill Farrell Memorial International. Impressively, he has made the finals of every international event he has entered.

Two-time Bill Farrell Memorial International champion Eric Schultz finished with a 2-2 record in a five-man round robin bracket at 92 kg to finish with a bronze medal. He scored nice wins over U23 European bronze medalist Radomir Stoyanov of Bulgaria and 2017 U23 World bronze medalist Uri Kalashnikov of Israel.

Leading the way for the second wave of U.S. men’s freestyle athletes, Quincy Monday joined his brother Kennedy in making a second-straight international event final in back-to-back weekends. Monday went 3-0 on the day at 74 kg highlighted by a 12-0 technical fall win over 2023 World bronze medalist Ramazan Ramazanov of Bulgaria in the opening round. He will face returning champion Ivan Kusyak of Ukraine for the gold medal tomorrow.

Also landing in a medal match for Team USA was Liam Cronin at 57 kg. Cronin, a past NCAA All-American for Nebraska, went 1-2 on Friday in Varna. He earned an 11-0 technical fall against 2024 Pan American bronze medalist Guesseppe Rea Villarroel of Ecuador. His two losses were close decisions, 6-3 to Roman Hutsuliak of Ukraine and 3-2 to Ivaylo Tisov of Bulgaria. Cronin will get another shot at Hutsuliak in the bronze medal match.

Falling outside of a medal opportunity were 2024 Bill Farrell Memorial International medalists Brandon Courtney at 57 kg and Elroy Perkin at 74 kg. Courtney went 1-2 and didn’t make it out of group play in his bracket. Perkin dropped his only bout of the day to Gigi Subtirica of Romania, 13-12.

The men’s freestyle tournament continues at 10:30 a.m. local time/3:30 a.m. (ET) on Saturday with the group three (86-97-125 kg) qualification rounds and group two (57-65-74 kg) repechage. The group two medal matches are set for 6 p.m. local time/11 a.m. (ET). In addition to Friday’s medal match qualifiers, Chance Marsteller, Zahid Valencia, Mason Parris and Jordan Wood will take the mats for Team USA tomorrow.
