Hafizov wins Greco-Roman silver at CISM Military Worlds in Armenia

YEREVAN, Armenia – 2020 Olympian SGT Ildar S. Hafizov won a silver medal at 63 kg in Greco-Roman on the first day of the 37th CISM World Military Wrestling Championships on Wednesday.

Hafizov was edged in the gold-medal finals by Kerim Kazim Kamal of Turkey, 4-0. Kamal scored a first-period takedown and a step out point in the first period to lead 3-0. In the second period, Hafizov was hit with a passivity point for the final score of the bout.

Hafizov won three straight matches to qualify for the finals, stopping Rayan Hawsawi of Saudi Arabia, Hrachya Poghosyan of Armenia and Oscar Leonard of Colombia.

Other U.S. Greco-Roman athletes competing on Wednesday were SPC Dalton J. Roberts (60 kg), SGT Xavier T. Johnson (67 kg) and SPC Justus R. Scott (77 kg), all who did not qualify for a medal match.

Johnson won his opening match against Faisal Aldossory of Saudi Arabia, then was defeated in the second match by Maksim Skuratov of Russia. Skuratov was defeated in the semifinals, eliminating Johnson from the competition.

Roberts was defeated in the opening match by two-time World medalist Aidos Sultangali of Kazakhstan, who did not reach the finals. Scott also fell in his first bout to 2022 World bronze medalist Yunus Basar of Turkey, who also did not reach the finals.

Women’s freestyle athlete SPC Nina Pham (50 kg) competed in a four-athlete round robin and did not earn a medal in her division, dropping all three of her bouts.

The competition continues on Thursday, with Greco-Roman athletes SPC William D. Sullivan (55 kg), SGT Alejandro Sancho (72 kg), SPC Kamal A. Bey (82 kg), plus women’s freestyle athletes SGT Areana L. Villaescusa (55 kg), SPC Abigail E. Nette (59 kg) and SPC Adaugo Nwachuchkwu (62 kg) representing Team USA.
