SOFIA, Bulgaria – The U.S. picked up a silver medal in women’s freestyle from Alex Hedrick on the first day of action at the 2024 Dan Kolov – Nikola Petrov International.
The U23 World bronze medalist from Fair Oaks, Calif., went 1-1 in a three-woman round robin bracket at 55 kg on Thursday to claim her second-straight medal at the tough international event. She opened with a 10-0 technical fall over Mihaela Mihova of Bulgaria, before dropping a tight 3-2 contest to Sezen Beleberova, also of Bulgaria.
Hedrick was one of two Americans in group one action at Asics Arena Hall in Sofia, Bulgaria. Northern Michigan product Casey Recrosio battled in the 82 kg Greco-Roman bracket but was unable to qualify for a medal match.
Recrosio was upended by Talas Ashirkhanov of Kazakhstan, 9-0, in his opening match. Ashirkhanov was unable to make the finals, keeping Recrosio from battling back in the repechage.
Group one weight classes in action at the Dan Kolov – Nikola Petrov International included women’s freestyle 55 kg, 59 kg, 65 kg and 72 kg, Greco-Roman 55 kg, 63 kg, 72 kg and 82 kg, and men’s freestyle 61 kg, 70 kg, 79 kg and 92 kg. Medal winners for each group one bracket can be found below.
The second set of weight classes taking the mats in Bulgaria on Friday are women’s freestyle 62 kg, 68 kg and 76 kg, men’s freestyle 57 kg, 65 kg and 74 kg, and Greco-Roman 87 kg and 97 kg. Four Americans are featured in this group—Dymond Guilford in women’s freestyle and Patrick Curran, George Sikes and Josef Rau in Greco-Roman.
