Savannah Talmadge of California secures a headlock pin at 125 pounds at the Air Force Special Warfare Junior National Duals
TULSA, Okla. – The first day of women’s Greco-Roman competition at the Air Force Special Warfare Junior National Duals has concluded with California Blue (Pool A), Texas Blue (Pool B), Kansas (Pool C) and Oklahoma Blue (Pool D) each winning its respective group.
20 teams began the day in one of four preliminary pools, structured as round robin style brackets. The top two teams from each preliminary pool advanced to the Gold/Silver bracket where they are guaranteed a top-eight finish and remain in contention for the first-place prize.
No. 1 overall seed California Blue brought home the Pool A title with four dominant dual meet wins on Friday at Cox Business Convention Center. The Cali crew put up at least 50 points in each of its dual meets. Its closest contest came from Colorado, the eventual Pool A runner-up, in a 50-17 final.
Texas Blue entered as the No. 2 seed and appears to be a challenger for the top spot. It cruised to first place in Pool B with a 4-0 record. Michigan, who was defeated by Texas Blue, 59-13, wound up in second place in the pool.
Taking the top spot in Pool C was No. 3 overall seed Kansas, who started sluggish with a close call against California Red before turning on the jets to emerge undefeated in pool play. The Sunflower State women clinched the Pool C championship with a 49-24 win over runner-up Ohio Red.
The favorites advanced to the Gold/Silver bracket out of Pool D as No. 4 Oklahoma edged No. 5 Missouri by twenty points, 46-26, in the pool championship dual.
All told, six of the top eight seeds made it to the Gold/Silver bracket, which will wrestle at least one round on Friday evening. No. 7 seed Utah and No. 8 seed Pennsylvania fell short of expectations in pool play.
