U.S. men win eight freestyle golds, two bronzes to conclude U15 Pan American Championships; Eight earn gold in both styles

by Richard Immel, USA Wrestling

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – Team USA concluded the U15 Pan American Championships at Cuna del Mágico González in San Salvador with its third 10-for-10 medal performance of the week, claiming eight gold medals and two bronze medals in men’s freestyle.

As they did in the Greco-Roman tournament on Thursday, Keegan Bassett and Chase Karenbauer captured back-to-back gold medals at the event with exceptional efforts in El Salvador. The duo took different approaches on the path to gold—Bassett pinned all three of his opponents at 41 kg, while Karenbauer posted 10-0 technical falls over each of his three foes at 44 kg.

Three more U.S. athletes won every match with bonus points—38 kg champion Evan Restivo, 52 kg champion Reece Movahead and 85 kg champion Carson Langford. Restivo put up four-straight 10-0 technical falls. Movahead earned three 10-0 technical falls before pinning Oziel Herrera Mallqui of Peru in the finals. Langford opened with a quick pin before rounding out his day with three technical fall wins. All three finished the day without giving up a single match point.

Also claiming gold medals with phenomenal outings were Thomas Banas at 57 kg, Camryn Howard at 68 kg and Mario Hutcherson at 75 kg.

Bronze medals were awarded to Mateo Gallegos at 48 kg and Justus Heeg at 62 kg. Both men dropped a match to eventual gold medalists before battling back for bronze.

The U.S. men gathered a 34-2 combined record on Saturday with eight victories by pin and 23 by technical fall.

Team USA easily ran away with the team race at 230 points. Puerto Rico finished in second place with 132 points. Mexico rounded out the top three with 128 points.

Eight of the bunch won gold medals in both freestyle and Greco-Roman—Restivo, Bassett, Karenbauer, Movahead, Banas, Howard, Hutcherson and Langford.

Complete brackets for each style and match-by-match results are available on UWW Arena. An archived video stream of the event can be found on the United World Wrestling Americas YouTube Channel.
