U.S. Greco-Roman team receives draws at Pan-American Championships

The U.S. athletes set to compete at the Pan-American Championships have received their first round draws. Competition begins at 10 a.m. CT with Greco-Roman, as eight weights are slated to kick off the action in Acapulco, Mexico. The action continues on Wednesday as Greco-Roman competition concludes with the last two weights, and women’s freestyle begins.

Athletes that win gold in Acapulco will qualify for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in State College, Pennsylvania. The Pan-American Championships are also used for ranking points, as several athletes are set to compete at the Pan-American Championships and the Pan-American Olympic Games Qualifier next week.

There are two 2023 Pan-American Championships medalists in Greco-Roman that return to the competition this week in Kamal Bey (77 kg) and Spencer Woods (87 kg). Woods won gold at last year’s event while competing at 82 kg, and has since moved up to 87 kg for this year’s tournament. Alan Vera Garcia is the U.S. representative at 97 kg this week. Vera won bronze at the 2023 Pan-American Championships.

At 55 kg, Camden Russell is set to take on Marco Garcia Alvarez from Mexico, a three-time age-group Pan-American Championships medalist. Randon Miranda (60 kg) will face off against Dicther Toro Castaneda from Colombia. Toro Castaneda boasts an long resume with five Pan-American Championships medals and four appearances as a Senior World Team member for Colombia.

The 63 kg division sees Hayden Tuma facing Kevin de Armas Rodriguez of Cuba, a silver medalist at the 2023 Pan-American Games and a bronze medalist at the 2023 Pan-American Championships, in the first round of action.

Alex Sancho matches up against the winner between Lee Mauras of Puerto Rico and Starlin Roodhelly Laguerre Laureus from the Dominican Republic. At 72 kg, Noah Wachsmuth is set to meet Jose Varela Garcia from Guatemala, a bronze medalist at the 2023 Pan-American Championships.

Bey competes against either David Choc Huoc of Guatemala, a two-time Pan-American Championships silver medalist, or John Yeats from Canada, a bronze medalist at the 2023 Pan-American Championships and a gold medalist at the 2017 Junior Pan-American Championships.

At 82 kg, Mahmoud Sebie will take on Sosruko Kodzokov of Brazil, a gold medalist at the 2018 World Military Championships for Russia.

Woods matches up against Carlos Munoz Jaramillo of Colombia, a seven-time Pan-American Championships medalist and the 2018 South American Games champion.

Vera Garcia sees Pedro Bello Soto of Mexico, a bronze medalist at the 2021 Junior Pan-American Games, in the first round of action in Acapulco, and is slated to compete on Thursday.

At 130 kg, Cohlton Schultz will face Moises Perez Hellburg from Venezuela, a bronze medalist at the 2023 Pan-American Games and the 2020 Pan-American Championships, in his first round matchup.
