KLIPPAN, Sweden – The U.S. women wrapped up day two of the Klippan Lady Open with six medalists in the U17 division, including gold medal efforts from Francesca Gusfa and Jaclyn Bouzakis, plus Karlee Brooks navigating to the finals in the Senior division.
The lightweight tandem of Gusfa and Bouzakis were dominant throughout the event—both women won every match with bonus points. Gusfa picked up a pair of 10-0 technical falls at 40 kg. Bouzakis went 3-0 at 43 kg with two first-period pins and an 11-0 technical fall.
U17 silver medals went to Kendall Moe at 46 kg, Morgan Lucio at 65 kg and Alexandra Alli at 73 kg. Moe looked sharp with three bonus-point wins prior to the finals where she fell on criteria, 1-1 to Josefiina Tuominen of Finland. Lucio went 2-1, while Alli went 1-1, in their round-robin brackets.
Emma Chacon battled back from a second-round loss to win four matches and claim the 57 kg bronze medal. She took out Saga Beck of Sweden 6-1 in the bronze medal bout.
On the Senior side, Elite Accelerator Program athlete Brooks cruised to three impressive wins to qualify for the 53 kg finals. She scored a 12-0 technical fall over Lobna Icaoui of Tunisia, a fall in 4:15 against Lilya Cohen of France and a 5-4 decision over Maelyss Rousselet. It’ll be Magdalena Glodek of Poland opposite Brooks in tomorrow’s final.
USOPTC athlete Hanna Erthum was the only other Senior level American to secure a medal match. She is matched against Mirijam Hansen of Norway for the 62 kg bronze medal.
65 kg competitor May Prado is still in the running for a medal but has some work to do in a five-woman round robin to make it happen. She went 0-1 on Saturday and has three matches to go on Sunday.
The young trio of Rianne Murphy, Genesis Cejudo and Clare Booe were unable to make a medal-match run in a deep 50 kg weight class. Booe was the only U.S. entrant to win a match, going 1-1 overall.
The Klippan Lady Open resumes at 10 a.m. local time on Sunday with the remaining women’s freestyle matches in the Senior division. Klippan, Sweden, is located six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time.
Complete brackets and a live stream of the event are available at www.klippansbk.se.
