No. 1 Central Oklahoma, with three semifinalists, leads No. 2 Lander after day one of NCAA Div. II Nationals

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – No. 1 Central Oklahoma, with three in the semifinals and six alive in the consolation rounds, leads No. 2 Lander by 6.5 points after the first day of the NCAA Div. II Nationals on Friday.


In the semifinals for UCO are No. 7 Ty Lucas (165), No. 1 Dalton Abney (197) and No. 1 Shawn Streck (285).


Lander has four in the semifinals, No. 3 James Joplin (125), No. 1 Zeth Brower (141), No. 4 David Hunsberger (165) and No. 4 Logan Hall (184) and two others in the consolation rounds.


Rounding out the top five are West Liberty in third with 38.5 points, St. Cloud State in fourth with 38 points and Western Colorado in fifth with 31.5 points.


In the middle weights, a pair of No. 1 wrestlers were beaten by No. 8 opponents in the quarterfinals. At 157 pounds, No. 8 Dominic Means of Gannon edged No. 1 Noah Hermosillo of Adams State, 7-6. Then at 165 pounds, No. 8 Hunter Mullin of Western Colorado knocked off No. 1 Shane Gantz of Wisconsin-Parkside, 8-1.


Three unseeded wrestlers reached the semifinals, John Carayiannis of Belmont Abbey (141), James Penfold of Lake Erie (174) and Cale Gray of Indianapolis (285).


Carayiannis knocked off the No. 2 seed in the first round, then beat unseeded Jake Niffenegger of Mercyhurst), 12-8 in the quarterfinals. Penfold, who had a pigtail match, beat another unseeded wrestler, Chase Morgan of West Liberty, 10-2 in his quarterfinal. Gray edged No. 2 seed Lee Herrington of Nebraska-Kearney, 9-8 in the quarterfinals.
