The USA will field a small but experienced team for the second United World Wrestling Beach World Series event of 2023, set for Singapore, June 10-11.
All five U.S. athletes competing in Singapore have wrestled in a number of Beach World Series events and are among those with world rankings at the Senior level in Beach Wrestling.
This is the fifth and final UWW Beach World Series event which is a qualifier for the 2023 World Beach Games in Bali, Indonesia. The first three of these qualifiers were held in 2022, with the fourth held in Argentina last month. From these five specific qualifiers, athletes from the top eight nations in each of the eight Beach World Series weight classes (four women’s weights, four men’s weights) qualify their nation to compete in the World Beach Games in Bali in August.
All five U.S. wrestlers competing in Singapore are within the top eight nations at their weight class in the World Beach Games qualifying standings: Mia Macaluso of Otisville, N.Y. (No. 5 at 60 kg women), Mitchell Cook of Orland Park, Ill. (No. 6 at 70 kg men), Laura White of Duanesburg, N.Y. (No. 6 at 50 kg women), Isabeau Shalack of Oak Lawn, Ill. (No. 6 at Over 70 kg women) and Ty Loethen of Columbia, Mo. (No. 7 at 80 kg men).
At the conclusion of the event in Singapore, if these athletes remain in the top eight of the qualifying standings, the United States will earn a spot at that weight class for the World Beach Games. The athletes do not qualify themselves for the World Beach Games but can secure a berth for Team USA at the event.
Based upon the World Beach Games Athlete Selection Procedures, there could be a wrestle-off between the athlete who qualifies the weight class for Bali and the 2023 U.S. Beach Nationals champion at that weight class later in June. Details will be announced next week.
There will be five Beach World Series events in 2023. Closing out the 2023 Beach World Series will be events in Saint Laurent du Var, France (June 29-30), Constanta, Romania (Sept. 9-10) and Mugla, Turkey (October 14-15).
The event will be broadcast live by FloWrestling.
