Nine athletes earn spot in WIN Div. I rankings for first time this week; Iowa stays No. 1 in TPI and dual rankings

by Mike Finn, WIN Magazine

NEWTON, Iowa — Nine different NCAA Division I wrestlers earned a spot for the first time in WIN Magazine’s Jan. 25 national rankings.

Two of those newcomers are a pair of redshirt freshmen from the University of Northern Iowa: Lance Runyon (18th at 174 pounds) and Parker Keckeisen (13th at 184), who each score big wins in UNI’s 23-13 home victory over Oklahoma this past Sunday. Other wrestlers making their first appearance in WIN’s weekly rankings include Bucknell’s Darren Miller (19th at 133), Wyoming’s Hayden Hastings (13th at 174), Hofstra’s Sage Heller (15th at 174), Iowa State’s Julien Broderson (18th at 174), NC State’s Isaac Trumble (16th at 197), Ohio State’s Gavin Hoffman (20th at 197) and Arizona State’s Cohlton Schultz (12th at heavyweight).

In the team rankings, the University of Iowa (2-0) remains No. 1 in the dual rankings. Iowa defeated Minnesota last weekend in their second Big Ten dual. The Hawkeyes, with all 10 wrestlers ranked in the Top 8 of their weight classes, also tops WIN’s Tournament Power Index with 134 points.

WIN’s TPI, which is tallied by adding the potential NCAA points associated with the spots where the individuals are ranked on the respective teams, also predicts where teams might finish in the 2021 NCAA Division I Championships, which will be held March 18-20 in St. Louis, Mo.

Michigan remains the No. 2 team in the TPI (78.5) and is 2.5 points ahead of Oklahoma State. Both of those teams are also ranked third and fourth in WIN’s dual rankings. Penn State, fourth in WIN’s TPI (67.5), ranks second in the dual rankings. Penn State has yet to wrestle this winter after its first two matches from the past two weeks were postponed. Michigan, which was supposed to face Iowa this Sunday, has seen its entire athletic department placed on a 14-day pause because of positive COVID tests from “several individuals linked to the U-M athletic department.”

The following is a breakdown of how the TPI is determined by a WIN’s rankings: 20 for 1st, 16 for 2nd, 13.5 for 3rd, 12.5 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 9 for 6th, 6.5 for 7th and 5.5 for 8th. Wrestlers ranked 9-12 earn two points each, followed by 1.5 points for wrestlers ranked 13-16 and 1 point for those ranked 17-20.
