The Wisconsin Wrestling League is proud to announce the addition of a girls division to our 2020-21 wrestling season. This division will be available to any kindergarten through 8th grade female wrestler that wants to participate this season.

"The purpose of adding a girls division is not just to provide an opportunity to girls that wrestle, but also to ensure we are doing what we can to help grow women's wrestling in Wisconsin," said Justin Tritz, Founder of the WWL. "We believe we can increase participation and foster growth by ensuring girls have the opportunity to compete against other girls."

The WWL will be kicking off the season with a girls event held at The Beast Cage in Wisconsin Rapids on Sunday, December 6th.

"Our goal is to increase visibility for Women's Wrestling by spotlighting this event on the league's opening weekend," said Tritz.

"We plan to work with the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation (WWF) and USA Wrestling (USAW) to market and promote the event as an opportunity for girls of every skill level to compete. No matter if this is her first competition or her one hundred and first, we look forward to welcoming her to compete on WWL mats." To which the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation's Women's Director, Laura Bartoszek, added, "In a time that seems that all doors that lead to wrestling rooms are slammed shut, the teaming up of the WWF and the WWL have found a way to provide a competitive structured environment along with providing the opportunity for quality competitors for its women of Wisconsin. It is imperative for a program to have these two key ingredients for success and growth."

The opportunity to participate in this league is available to girls of every skill level.

"The inclusion of a girls division within the WWL is beyond important for these athletes," said Kaylin Collins of Women in Singlets (W.I.S.). "I was absolutely honored to speak on behalf of the girls and work as part of the planning committee to bring their ideas to fruition. The WWL plan creates the opportunity for girls to compete right here in Wisconsin. Without the league's support, many girls would have struggled to find competitions close to home this season. Plus, in an effort to promote growth and increase the number of girls at WWL competitions, the league has designated W.I.S. as a sort of catchall club. So, even if a girl is unable to train at a WWL club facility, she can still register for competitions as part of the W.I.S. roster."

"Ideally we would have hundreds of beginner level girls participating in WWL competitions this season, because that would mean we did our job in growing participation," added Tritz.

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) will be offering girls wrestling as an official High School sport for the 2021-22 season.

"There has never been a better time for female athletes to get involved in wrestling as opportunities just continue to increase," Tritz continued. "By participating in the WWL, girls are not only breaking down barriers for all women, they are also spearheading something special for the girls following in their footsteps. It's an exciting time to be involved in women's wrestling. The WWL would like to not only encourage, but empower, all girls to be strong leaders and join us on the mats this wrestling season."
