CORALVILLE, Iowa - The final three weight classes in women’s freestyle wrapped up on Saturday night at the Senior Nationals, with three champions reaching the top of the podium
Winning her third Senior Nationals title was Jennifer Page of the Titan Mercury WC, who needed some last second heroics to edge five-time age-group World medalist Macey Kilty of the Sunkist Kids, 4-3.
Kilty came out strong, scoring a takedown in the first period to lead 2-0 at the break, and added a step out in the second period for a 3-0 margin. Page kept going hard, and was able to counter a Kilty shot, securing what appeared to be a takedown and a turn for a 7-3 lead with five seconds left. Kilty’s corner challenged the call, and the officials rescored it with Page ahead 4-3. Page held position in the closing seconds for the comeback win.
Page has missed a number of recent years of competition due to injury, but said that she was healthy again for this year’s event. She now trains at the Nittany Lion WC, after many years at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center.
Five-time World champion Adeline Gray of the New York AC was dominant in her victory at 76 kg, including a 10-0 technical fall over two-time World Team member Victoria Francis of the Titan Mercury WC in the finals. Gray scored a takedown for a 2-0 lead, and when she got on top of Francis in par terre, was able to secure four tilt exposures to close out the match. It was her fifth Senior Nationals title.
In her first match, she pinned unattached Samantha Springer in 37 seconds, then stopped Tristan Kelly of Betterman Elite in a 10-0 technical fall in 2:08 in the semifinals.
Going 3-0 in a four-athlete round-robin at 68 kg to claim her third straight Senior Nationals title was top seeded Forrest Molinari of the Titan Mercury WC. In her final match, she scored a 5-1 decision over Skylar Grote of the New York AC to clinch the title. Grote scored first, but Molinari quickly knotted the score at 1-1, then scored the final four points and controlled the action.
Molinari was fifth in the 2018 and 2019 World Championships at 65 kg. Grote, seeded No. 3, had upset No. 2 seed and 2018 Final X finalist Rachel Watters of the New York AC in the first round, 11-3.
The Outstanding Wrestler in women’s freestyle was 50 kg champion Sarah Hildebrandt of the New York Athletic Club, who won her title on Friday night.
The Titan Mercury WC won the team title, with the Sunkist Kids winning the team second place trophy.
