USA Wrestling’s Senior Nationals will be held at the Xtream Arena & GreenState Family Fieldhouse in Coralville, Iowa, October 9-11. Heading into the final week of registration, a number of outstanding athletes have already entered in the three Olympic disciplines.
Today, we take an early look at the registrants in the women’s freestyle division, which already includes a number of past Senior World Team members and age-group World medalists.
There are a pair of two-time Senior World medalists in the draw, Alli Ragan of the Sunkist Kids at 57 kg and Alyssa Lampe of the Sunkist Kids at 50 kg.
Ragan has won two World silver medals, in 2016 and 2017. She has competed in six Senior World Championships for Team USA. Ragan also boasts three age-group World medals, a University World Games silver in 2017, plus Junior World bronze medals in 2011 and 2012. Ragan will be competing at an Olympic weight class in Coralville.
Lampe claimed a pair of World bronze medals, back in 2012 and 2013. She also boasts a pair of Junior World bronze medals, which she won in 2007 and 2008. Lampe had retired after the 2016 Olympic Trials, but made a comeback, winning the Senior Nationals in Fort Worth, Texas in December 2019.
Two-time Senior World Team member Victoria Francis of the Titan Mercury WC is entered at 76 kg. This is a higher weight than where she plans to try out for the Olympic Team, where she will compete at 68 kg. She also boasts a 2014 Junior World bronze medal.
Three other talented Senior-level wrestlers, who are multiple Senior Nationals champions, are in the field already, Jennifer Page of the Titan Mercury WC at 62 kg, Jackie Cataline of the Titan Mercury WC at 68 kg and Precious Bell of the Titan Mercury WC at 76 kg.
Page won U.S. Open titles in 2014 and 2017, and was a Junior World bronze medalist in 2013. Cataline also secured a pair of Senior National crowns, also in 2014 and 2016. Bell has won the title at the last two Senior Nationals, claiming golds in April 2019 and December 2019. Bell currently sits at No. 2 on the Senior Women’s National Team.
Among the past age-group World champions in the field is Katherine Shai of the Titan Mercury WC at 53 kg, who was a 2008 University World gold medalist. Shai has been on the Senior National Team six different years, and currently sits at No. 2 on the National Team ladder.
There are three recent Cadet World champions who are now top Senior-level stars on the registration list.
This group is led by Macey Kilty of the Sunkist Kids at 62 kg, who has accumulated five age-group World medals so far. She was a 2018 Cadet World champion. Her other age groups medals are a U23 silver medal in 2019, a pair of Junior World silver medals in 2018 and 2019 and a Cadet World bronze medal from 2016. Kilty is also No. 3 on the Senior National Team ladder.
Emily Shilson of the Titan Mercury WC, who is competing at 50 kg, was also a 2018 Cadet World champion. She added a 2018 Youth Olympic Games title, the first U.S. wrestler to ever win that prestigious event. Shilson was also a 2017 Cadet World silver medalist.
2015 Cadet World champion Ronna Heaton of the Sunkist Kids is entered at 53 kg. Heaton was also a 2016 Cadet World silver medalist, and competed in the 2017 and 2018 Junior World Championships.
Add in Amy Fearnside of the Titan Mercury WC at 50 kg, a 2014 University World silver medalist. Fearnside is currently No. 3 on the Senior National Team. Her top Senior Nationals performance was a third place at the most recent Senior Nationals in Fort Worth in December 2019. Fearnside has also competed at the Junior World Championships and the U23 World Championships.
