Gross edges Meredith, Hildebrandt gets tech over Lampe in Main Events at Wisconsin RTC Underground 1

Seth Gross and Bryce Meredith continued their rivalry going back to college days in an action-packed Main Event as part of the Wisconsin Regional Training Center Underground 1 card in an undisclosed location in Wisconsin on Tuesday night.
In a back-and-forth battle which featured a number of exciting scrambles, Gross scored first and led the rest of the way for an exciting 10-7 freestyle win over Meredith.
Gross led 4-0 on a pair of takedowns early in the first period, but Meredith came back with a takedown to make it 4-2. An active scramble led to a 2-and-2 call from the officials to make it 6-4 for Gross at the break.
Meredith forced a step out early in the second period to make it a 6-5 score early in the second period. A Gross low single stretched it to 8-5, but Meredith scored on his own low single to close it to 8-7. In a key exchange, after a Meredith leg attack, Gross secured a spin behind takedown to finish off the bout with the 10-7 margin.
Their career record against each other now stands at 2-2. Wrestling fans remember their “super match” in a college dual meet, when both were ranked No. 1 in the nation, Gross at 133 pounds for South Dakota State and Meredith at 141 pounds for Wyoming. Meredith won that first showdown to start a nice rivalry that has entertained fans in recent years.
Gross finished his college career at Wisconsin, where he now trains with the Wisconsin RTC. Meredith is now with the New Jersey RTC. Gross has qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials at 57 kg, while Meredith is attempting to qualify at 65 kg.
In the Co-Main Event, in a battle of Olympic contenders, 2018 World silver medalist Sarah Hildebrandt got her offense untracked on the way to a 12-1 technical fall over two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe. It was the first time they had met in a match, although both previously trained at the same time at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center.
Hildebrandt scored first on a crotch lift to lead 2-0, but Lampe forced a stepout to make it 2-1. Hildebrandt scored on a shuck for a takedown for a 4-1 lead. After a Hildebrandt single leg takedown made it 6-1, she was able to secure an ankle lace and add three straight ankle lace turns to secure the 12-1 technical fall.
Both have qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials at 50 kg. Hildebrandt won her World silver at 53 kg, but qualified the USA to compete at the 50 kg weight class at the Olympic Games with her runner-up performance at the Pan American Olympic Qualifier in Ottawa, Canada in March. Lampe, a Wisconsin native, won her World bronze medals in 2012 and 2013 and made a comeback from retirement in late 2019.
The lone Greco-Roman match of the night was a match-up of graduates from Stevens Point High School in Wisconsin. Two-time Olympian Ben Provisor, the older opponent, dominated in his upper body position to secure an 8-0 technical fall victory over Ohio State wrestler Fritz Schierl, 8-0. Provisor secured five step outs, and added a passivity point and a gut wrench for his points.
The Gross vs. Meredith match was the only bout that did not end early, as the other seven matches on the card were either technical falls or pins.
In a battle of heavyweights, Danny Chaid fell behind early, but scored 14 straight points to secure a 14-4 technical fall over Wisconsin wrestler Peter Christensen. The match started with a Christensen takedown, and then a crotch lift turn for a 4-0 lead. Chaid scored four takedowns in the first period, including a four-point blast double, to lead 10-4 at the break. A pair of takedowns by Chaid in the second period closed out the win.
Chaid, who wrestled for Oklahoma, Grand Canyon and North Carolina in college, is currently back home training with the California RTC. Chaid was fifth in the 2020 Senior Nationals.
Joe Zargo, who is with the Wisconsin RTC, scored a 10-0 first-period technical fall over Wisconsin native and current NC State wrestler Hunter Lewis. Zargo followed a takedown with four ankle lace turns to put the match away.
In the first women’s freestyle bout of the evening, Grand View’s Alexis Gomez countered a throw attempt and pinned Indian Hills CC star Gina-Marie Santiago Avila in 1:23. After Santiago took a 1-0 lead on a step out point, Gomez countered a Santiago lateral drop attempt, forcing Santiago to her back and getting the fall. Gomez won the recent UWW Junior Nationals. Santiago was a Pan American Cadet silver medalist for Puerto Rico.
Jared Krattiger, a redshirt sophomore and starter for Wisconsin, was strong on his feet on the way to a 11-0 technical fall over Wisconsin native Eddie Smith, a graduate of Loras College and two-time Div. III All-American. Krattinger scored three first period takedowns, and added a step out and two more second-period takedowns to put away the match. Smith was recently eighth in the 2020 Senior Nationals in Greco-Roman.
In a battle of Wisconsin sophomore teammates, Drew Scharenbrock dominated from his feet to score a 10-0 first-period technical fall over Kevin Meicher. Scharenbrock scored four straight takedowns, including a four-point takedown with exposure midway through the period. The athletes had competed against each other in the Wisconsin state tournament before heading off to college.
