O’Toole wins Outstanding Wrestler, as nine different RTCs get champions at UWW Junior Freestyle Nationals

OMAHA, Neb. – Missouri star Keegan O’Toole of the Tiger Style WC won the 70 kg title and was named Outstanding Wrestler in men’s freestyle as the UWW Junior National Championships concluded on Sunday afternoon. Wrestlers age 17-20 compete in this division.
O’Toole jumped to an 8-0 lead before pinning Clayton Ulrey of the Southeast RTC in the finals. O’Toole had a pin, four technical falls and a decision on the way on the way to his dominant win.
The Tiger Style Wrestling Club was the only RTC with two champions in the UWW Junior event, as Joshua Edmond claimd the title at 65 kg. Edmond hit a few big throws to wrap up a first period 10-0 technical fall over Bryce Andronian of the Southeast RTC.
Dylan Ragusin of the Cliff Keen WC, who competes for Michigan, was dominant in the 57 kg finals, securing a 13-1 technical fall over Angelo Rini of the New York City RTC. Ragusin was a 2020 Senior Nationals runner-up in October at this weight class.
At 79 kg, Michael O'Malley of the Pennsylvania RTC scored a big pin over Patrick Kennedy of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club in 1:10. He nailed a double overhook throw from his feet to put Kennedy on his back for the touch fall.
One of the highly anticipated finals came at 92 kg, where A.J. Ferrari of the Cowboy RTC stopped Rocky Elam of the Tiger Style Wrestling Club, 6-1. Ferrari jumped to a 6-0 lead on a pair of takedowns and two stepouts, with Elam only able to score a step out late in the bout.
At 61 kg, Ridge Lovett of the Nebraska Wrestling Training Center edged Cole Matthews of Pittsburgh Wrestling Club, 5-4 in the finals. Lovett led 5-2 in the second period, before Matthews turned Lovett with a head pinch with just four seconds left and time ran out before he could secure a possible fall.
Perhaps the biggest surprise champion was Bernie Truax of the Central Coast RTC at 74 kg, who stopped Cade Devos of the Jackrabbit Wrestling Club, 8-3 in the finals. Truax, who wrestles for Cal Poly, led 4-2 at the break, and two second period takedowns gave him the edge he needed. Truax scored a big 4-0 quarterfinal win over top seed Alex Facundo, and followed it up with a title run.
At 86 kg, Joel Shapiro of the Cyclone RTC defeated John Poznanski of the Scarlet Knights Wrestling Club, 4-2, scoring a takedown in each period.
In a very active heavyweight match, Joshua Heindselman of the Oklahoma RTC scored multiple takedowns in both periods to stop Hunter Catka of the Southeast RTC, 15-6.
The 97 kg weight class was a four-athlete roundrobin. In the final match, with both athletes entering with 2-0 records, Tyrell Gordon of the Panther Wrestling Club RTC pinned Tyrie Houghton of the Wolfpack Wrestling Club in 1:34. Gordon hit a big throw to get Houghton onto his back for the fall.
