OMAHA, Neb. – What did Taylor Lujan of the Panther WC RTC do for an encore, after placing second in FloWrestling’s 8-Man 195-pound bracket? He came to the U23 National Championships in Omaha, claimed the 86 kg title and went home as the event’s Outstanding Wrestler.
Lujan needed just 2:44 to secure a 10-0 technical fall win over Max Lyon of the Boilermaker RTC in the finals. He used two takedowns and three gut wrenches to secure the victory. He scored a pin and four technical falls during the two-day event.
Wrestling fans who have been waiting for high-level competition featuring college-age wrestlers had some great action to enjoy, as numerous Regional Training Centers affiliated with college wrestling programs brought a strong field of competitors.
One of the big finals matches came at 65 kg, where Missouri’s Brock Mauller of the Tiger Style WC battled Oklahoma’s Domonick Demas of the Oklahoma RTC. Mauller led 2-0 at the break, but opened it up with six second-period points to claim the title.
Iowa State’s Ramazan Attasauov of the Cyclone Regional Training Center finished off a great weekend of wrestling by claiming the 57 kg title, pinning Danny Vega of the Jackrabbit WC in the finals in 2:47. Attasauov scored a big 6-6 win over Patrick Glory, who stars for Princeton, then beat Rayvon Foley, a Michigan State star, 5-4 in the semifinals.
Junior World silver medalist Mitchell McKee of the Gopher Wrestling Club – RTC needed just 59 seconds to secure a 10-0 technical fall in the 61 kg finals over Michael Colaiocco of the Pennsylvania RTC.
Evan Wick of the Titan Mercury WC, a star for Wisconsin, looked strong in the finals, as he defeated Illinois star Danny Braunagel of the Illinois Regional Training Center/Illini WC, 10-4 at 74 kg. Wick jumped to an 8-0 lead in the match and led 10-2 at the break, and held Braunagel to one takedown in the second period.
At 79 kg, David McFadden of the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club won an entertaining 12-5 battle with Nelson Brands of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club. McFadden, the former Virginia Tech star who trains with the Pennsylvania RTC, had leads of 5-0, 7-2 and 9-3, but Brands kept battling back with scores to keep it fairly close.
Most of the championship finals were closely contested matches, where only a few points made the difference concerning who would go home with the USA Wrestling Stop Sign national champion trophy.
At 70 kg, Michigan’s Will Lewan of the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club edged Iowa’s Kaleb Young of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, 5-4 for the title. Lewan broke open a 2-2 tie with a stepout point and a takedown, and held Young to just one takedown late in the bout.
At 92 kg, Jakob Woodley of the Oklahoma Regional Training Center scored two second-period points to break up a 4-4 tie at the break and defeat Jacob Warner of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, 6-4. Woodley was able to get key step outs to secure the win.
A wild battle at 97 kg saw past Junior World Team member Tanner Sloan of the Jackrabbit Wrestling Club edge Noah Adams of the West Virginia Regional Training Center, 10-9. Sloan hit a big four-pointer in the first period, and extended his lead to 9-2 early in the second period, but Adams powered back with three takedowns and a step out late in the bout to fall just short of a comeback.
The 125 kg final was a close battle that went down to a late takedown, as Youssif Hemida of the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club edged Anthony Cassioppi of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, 8-7. Hemida, the former Maryland star who was a U23 World silver medalist in 2018, led 6-3 at the break. Cassioppi scored a second-period takedown followed by a gut wrench to lead 7-6 in the second period, but Hemida scored the winning takedown on a single leg attack.
