Porsch pins Senior National champ Peak, Knopick named OW at UWW Junior Greco-Roman Nationals

OMAHA, Neb. – A number of wrestlers made a big statement with their performance at the UWW Junior Greco-Roman Nationals, none bigger than Dayton Porsch of the Beaver WC at 67 kg.
Porsch, who has little national-level Greco-Roman background, nailed a headlock in the 67 kg finals and pinned 2020 Senior Nationals champion Benji Peak of the Sunkist Kids in just 48 seconds. Porsch celebrated his shocking victory in grand style. Porsch was a four-time Kansas state champion who wrestled at UNI.
Peak had also competed in the U23 Greco-Roman Nationals on Friday, making the finals but deciding not to compete in that tournament finals.
The Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament was 55 kg champion Conor Knopick of the MWC Wrestling Academy, who stopped Billy Sullivan of Legends of Gold Las Vegas in an entertaining and highly technical finals match, 12-5. Sullivan led 5-2, but Knopick opened up his offense to score 10 straight points. Knopick, who trains in the Omaha area under respected coach Zac Dominguez, was a member of the 2019 Cadet World Team.
In another upset, Justin McCunn of the Viking WC defeated 2019 Junior World Team member and returning UWW Junior national champion Jack Ervien, Jr., by a 16-7 technical fall in the 77 kg finals. McCunn, who competes for NAIA powerhouse Grand View University, trailed 6-0 early in the match but was able to score throws and turns on Ervien to secure the technical fall.
Chayse LaJoie of the Spartan Combat RTC won the 60 kg title with a 10-2 technical fall over David Stepanian of the New York AC, 10-2. LaJoie, a 2019 Junior Nationals champion while a Michigan high school star, is now with the Cornell program.
This tournament offered an opportunity for a number of college athletes to go home with a national title and make a name in the Greco-Roman community.
In the 97 kg finals, Isaac Trumble of the Wolfpack WC, who wrestles for NC State, scored an impressive 8-0 technical fall over Denzel Mabry of the San Francisco WC, a wrestler for San Francisco State.
At heavyweight, Spencer Trenary of the Jackrabbit WC, a wrestler for South Dakota State, pinned Little Rock wrestler Josiah Hill of the Arkansas RTC in 56 seconds.
Bringing home a UWW Junior Greco-Roman title to the University of Pennsylvania was Jake Hendricks of the Pennsylvania RTC, who scored a 7-3 finals decision over Jacob Anderson of the Avalanche Wrestling Association at 82 kg.
The champion at 72 kg was Weston Milnes of Greco-Roman Development, who scored a technical fall over Robert Perez II of Greco-Roman Development, 8-0.
Other individual champions were Payton Jacobson of the Ringers WC at 63 kg and Jack Darrah of Xtreme Training at 87 kg.
Jacobson hit a big four-point throw to break up a close match, defeating Logan Hatch of Greco-Roman Development, 5-3. Darrah trailed 1-0 at the break, but scored four straight second-period points to edge Tyler Hannah of the Dubuque WC, 4-3.
