Peyton Omania of the USA celebrates a big win at the 2019 UWW Junior World Championships. Omania is among the returning national champions competing in Omaha this weekend.
If the 2019 USA Wrestling season seems like it was a long, long time ago, actually it was.
This weekend, USA Wrestling is hosting its U23 National Championships and UWW Junior National Championships in all three Olympic disciplines in Omaha, Neb., Nov. 13-15.
To find what returning champions will be in the field, you need to go back between 17-19 months.
The 2019 UWW Junior Nationals in men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman were held in April 2019 in Las Vegas. The 2019 U23 and UWW Junior Nationals in women’s freestyle were held in May 2019 in Irving, Texas. The U23 Nationals in men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman were held in June 2019 in Akron, Ohio.
In spite of the long delay, athletes in the field this weekend won 23 total U23 or UWW Junior National titles last year. Even though this event is held at a weird time, under unprecedented circumstances, there are a bunch of athletes coming out in Omaha to battle for another USA Wrestling Stop-Sign national trophy.
On the U23 level, there are 11 returning champions. Five returning 2019 U23 women’s champions are back this year. Four 2019 U23 Greco-Roman champions are back this year, and two U23 men’s freestyle champions.
At the UWW Junior level, there are four returning champions, three in women’s freestyle and one in men’s freestyle. (Actually, Dylan Ragusin of the Cliff Keen WC won the 2019 UWW Juniors in Greco-Roman but is only wrestling freestyle this year, so we are counting him in this group.)
There are eight 2019 UWW Junior champions who are moving on up to the U23 level this year, and seeking a national title on the next age level.
Two athletes with multiple titles should be noted. Last year, Macey Kilty of the Sunkist Kids won the UWW Junior and U23 National titles. Kilty returns this weekend seeking to repeat in both age groups.
Also of note is Peyton Omania, who is wrestling unattached, also a 2019 UWW Junior champion and U23 champion in Greco-Roman. Omania returns this year, but is only entered in the U23 age level.
Two of the 2019 U23 Greco-Roman national champions are competing in both Greco-Roman and freestyle at this year’s U23 Nationals: Randon Miranda of the NYAC and Lenny Merkin, who is wrestling unattached. Can they win national titles in both styles this year?
We were going to list all of the returning All-Americans from the 2019 national events, but that would take too long to compile, since the event begins tomorrow. Enjoy all of the action this weekend live on FloWrestling.
