Chavez wins OW, nine other ranked girls claim high school titles at Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals

DES MOINES, Iowa – It was an exciting session of women’s wrestling at the 2020 Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals with 10 nationally ranked high school girls collecting championships on Sunday morning in Des Moines, Iowa.

Highlighting the group was Samara Chavez of Spartan Mat Club (Texas), who is the No. 1 ranked girl in the country at 112 pounds. On Sunday, she won the 112-pound gold medal with five wins on the day, including four victories by fall. In the finals, Chavez faced Alexis Hanks of Texas, who she pinned in 3:44.

Because of her performance, Chavez was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler.

The nine other ranked girls winning titles on Sunday included:

• 106 pounds – Faith Cole (No. 3 at 112)
• 117 pounds – Salyna Shotwell ( No. 13 at 112)
• 122 pounds – Shelby Moore (No. 13 at 117)
• 127 pounds – Adrienna Turner (No. 12 at 112)
• 132 pounds – Yele Aycock (No. 11 at 132)
• 138 pounds – Janida Garcia (No. 13 at 122)
• 144 pounds – Maddie Kubicki (No. 3 at 132)
• 152 pounds – Rose Cassioppi (No. 25 at 144)
• 180 pounds – Sabrina Nauss (No. 8 at 180)

Five of the morning’s 13 finals featured ranked matchups. At 117 pounds, Shotwell defeated Rose Ann Marshall (No. 17 at 112), 2-0. In the 122 final, Moore edged out Alyssa Randles (No. 12 at 122) with a 4-3 decision. The 127 and 138 finals both ended in sudden victory. For the crown at 127 pounds, Turner defeated Montana DeLawder (No. 2 at 127), 2-0, and at 138 pounds, Garcia held off Madison Sandquist (No. 13 at 138) for a 4-2 decision.

One of the most notable ranked head-to-heads came at 180 pounds, where Nauss knocked off No. 2 Brittyn Corbishley with a pin in 3:33.

Other champions for high school girls included Persaeus Gomez (100), Bella Porcelli (164), Olivia Brown (200) and Domiqnesha Delaney (225).
