Back from injury, David Taylor qualifies USA for the Tokyo Olympics
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
Last May, David Taylor, a 2018 World champion, suffered a knee injury that has kept him out of competition since. Last week, he made his return to the mat and international competition, wrestling at the Pan American Olympic Qualifier in Ottawa, Canada.
The goal was to qualify the USA at the 86 kg weight class in men's freestyle for the Tokyo Olympics. Only the finalists in each weight class would earn the bid for their nations. Below is the interview from David Taylor seconds after he advanced to the finals. He eventually won gold at the event with a win by injury default in the finals.
Note: Qualifying the weight does not mean that athlete is on the U.S. Olympic Team. They will still have to win the U.S. Olympic Trials. Date is TBD.
