Grand View wins ninth straight NAIA title with two champions, as Menlo rallies to take second

PARK CITY, Kansas – Nine in a row!!!


Grand View (Iowa) continues to dominate NAIA wrestling, winning its ninth straight team title, led by a pair of individual champions, Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer (157) and Evan Hansen (197), scoring 72.5 points more than the second-place team, Menlo (Calif.).


Hansen won his fourth career NAIA title, becoming the first Viking wrestler to reach this lofty place. Seeded No. 1, he pinned second-seed Isaac Bartel of Montana-State Northern in 6:37 in the finals. It was a rematch of last year’s finals, won by Hansen by decision.


Rodriguez-Spencer, also seeded No. 1, needed to go into sudden victory overtime to defeat No. 11 seed Casey Dobson of Providence (Mont), 7-5.


Nick Mitchell’s had 12 wrestlers qualify for the NAIA Nationals, and 10 were All-Americans, to secure 157 team points in the dominant effort. Finishing as runners-up were Justin Portillo (125) and Kendon Lee (141).


Menlo, which was in fourth after the first day of competition, finished with 84.5 points, passing Reinhart (Ga.) which finished third with 83 points and Cumberlands (Ky.) which was fourth with 78.5 points. The Oaks had an individual champion, as No. 4 seed Blaysen Terukina (Menlo (Calif.) beat No. 6 seed Austin Wallace-Lister of Warner Pacific (Ore.), 2-0 in the finals at 133.


Joining Hansen as repeat national champions were Lucas Lovvorn of Baker (174), Anthony Orozco of Menlo (184) and Brandon Reed of Lindsey Wilson (285).


Other individual champions were No. 10 seed Nick Kunz of Montana State – Northern at 125, No. 3 seed Baterdene Boldmaa of Doane (Neb.) at 141, No. 1 seed Tres Leon of Cumberlands (Ky.) at 149 and No. 2 seed Brennan Swafford of Graceland (Iowa) at 165.
