Match of the Day: Jordan Burroughs claims his first World title at the 2011 World Championships in Istanbul
by USA Wrestling
Jordan Burroughs won his first World gold medal at the 2011 World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. Since then, he has established himself as one of the greatest American wrestlers of all time, earning three more World titles, an Olympic gold medal at the London Games and three World bronze medals.
At his first Senior World Championships, Burroughs shocked the wrestling community, defeating Russia’s Denis Tsargush in the semifinals. Tsargush claimed gold at the weight class in 2009 and 2010 and would go on to take bronze at the 2012 Olympic Games, falling to Burroughs again in the semifinals.
In the finals, Burroughs would face another highly credentialed foe in Sadegh Goudarzi of Iran. Goudarzi was the 2010 runner-up to Tsargush and finished with bronze in 2009. In 2012, Goudarzi would challenge Burroughs again in the Olympic gold medal match and would once again come up short.
