After Pat Downey was removed from the July 25 card, a number of conversation swirled about Downey's replacement. Myles Martin, the #8 ranked 86kg in the world, has stepped in to take on the 2018 World Champ.
Martin is still young in his senior level freestyle career, having graduate from Ohio State in 2019, but the NCAA Champ has already made serious waves that have him ranked in the top 10 in the world.
One of Martin's most impressive wins came against Alex Dieringer in the semifinals of Senior Nationals in December. Martin needed late match heroics to reverse the result of his loss to Dieringer at the Bill Farrell just a few weeks earlier. As an NCAA wrestler, Martin was an NCAA Champ and a four-time All-American. He won 58.57% of his matches by bonus points.
Martin and Taylor have yet to face one another in their careers, and Taylor is excited about the opportunity to wrestle Martin. When asked about the matchup, he said:
"When I took the match with Pat Downey, I didn't take it because I thought he was a great opponent, I took it because I truly wanted to smash him. I wanted to make the history score of ours to be 30-0. But now I'm excited because I truly have a great opponent. When I was at Penn State, I didn't get the opportunity to wrestle a great Buckeye, but now I get the opportunity to wrestle truly one of the greatest to ever put on a singlet, a National Champion in Myles Martin."
Can the upstart Martin challenge the champ? We'll find out on July 25 in Austin, Texas.
