Match of the Day: Kyle Dake and Andrew Howe have an overtime thriller at the 2013 World Team Trials
by USA Wrestling
Over the years, Kyle Dake and Andrew Howe have had some epic clashes. Although Howe never made a Senior World Team, he was consistently one of the top wrestlers in the country. By the time his career ended, Howe was a two-time U.S. Open champion, a two-time Olympic Trials runner-up and a six-time National Team member.
Dake, who is still competing, has also made six National Teams. In 2018 and 2019, Dake made the Senior World Team at 79 kg and claimed back-to-back World titles.
In 2013, both Dake and Howe were competing at 74 kg. Jordan Burroughs was the 2011 World champion and 2012 Olympic champion. To challenge Burroughs in a best-of-three series for the World Team spot, one had to wrestle their way through a brutal challenge tournament.
While Burroughs would ultimately go on to win the spot and another World gold, Dake vs. Howe was one of the premier matches of the challenge tournament.
