ROME, Italy – The USA collected a pair of Greco-Roman medals on Wednesday at the Matteo Pellicone International, the first UWW Ranking Series event of 2020, in Rome, Italy.

At 55 kg, Max Nowry, a 2019 World Military Games bronze medalist, secured the silver medal after a day of round-robin action. Wrestling in a four-man bracket, Nowry went 2-1 on Wednesday. In his final match, Nowry took on 2013 Junior World champion and 2018 University World bronze medalist Serif Kilic of Turkey to determine his place.

Nowry went up 3-0 early after drawing a passivity from Kilic and scoring a gut wrench. Shortly into the second period, Nowry used a lat drop for four points, putting Kilic to his back and getting the fall in 3:49.

Winning bronze on Wednesday was G’Angelo Hancock at 97 kg.

Hancock was impressive in his bronze-medal match, shutting down two-time U23 World champion Semen Novikov of Ukraine in 54 seconds.

Off the whistle, Hancock scored on a step out. Seconds later, he took down Novikov and added a gut wrench, followed immediately by a four-point lift for a 9-0 technical fall.

Three athletes finished fifth at the tournament, including Joe Rau at 87 kg, Patrick Martinez at 87 kg and Adam Coon at 130 kg.

Rau took on four-time age-group World medalist Ali Cengiz of Turkey, who scored quickly and often for a first-period 9-0 technical fall.

In the other 87 kg bronze match, Martinez fell to 2019 Pan American Games champion Luis Avendano Rojas of Venezuela in a tight 4-1 battle.

2018 World silver medalist Coon went back and forth with Lingzhe Meng of China in the bronze-medal match. Coon took the lead on criteria, 2-2, in the final 20 seconds, but Coon lost his balance near the edge with 10 seconds left and Meng capitalized for a takedown and a 4-2 win.
