Ten Americans are set to compete at the Thor Masters Greco-Roman tournament in Nykobing Falster, Denmark next Friday and Saturday, January 17 and 18. Five of the wrestlers are currently members of the National Team, and three wrestlers recently won Senior Nationals titles in Fort Worth, Texas, this December.
Cohlton Schultz (Parker, Colo./Sunkist Kids), No. 2 on the National Team at 130 kg and the 2019 Senior Nationals champion, is the lone big man registered for the U.S. Schultz, who is currently redshirting during his true freshman season at Arizona State, is a 2017 Cadet World Champion, a 2019 Junior World runner-up and a 2018 Junior World bronze medalist.
Leslie Fuenffinger, (Colorado Springs Colo./Army WCAP), No. 2 on the National Team at 60 kg, is another Senior Nationals champion competing. This is Fuenffinger’s first year as a National Team member. However, he was a two-time Junior World Team member in 2011 and 2012.
The final Senior Nationals champion competing is Alejandro Sancho (Colorado Springs Colo./Army WCAP) at 67 kg. Sancho is a three-time National Team member but did not make the team in 2019. As of late, he has been on a tear, winning Senior Nationals and also the Bill Farrell International in November.
Another college-aged National Team member competing is Brady Koontz (Plover, Wis./Titan Mercury/Ohio RTC). The would-be redshirt sophomore at Ohio State is also utilizing an Olympic redshirt. He is currently No. 2 at 55 kg.
The other two National Team members registered are Alex Mossing (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Force) at 77 kg and Lucas Sheridan (Colorado Springs Colo./Army WCAP) at 97 kg. Mossing, who is currently No. 2 at 72 kg, moved up a weight class earlier this year to prepare to make the Olympic Team. Sheridan, who is No. 2 at 97 kg, has had solid results recently, finishing runner-up at Senior Nationals, third at the Haparanda Cup in Sweden and fourth at the Bill Farrell International.
Lenny Merkin (Brooklyn, N.Y./New York AC) and Carter Nielsen (Foley, Minn./MN Storm), who are competing at 67 kg and 87 kg, both have age-group level World experience. Merkin, who is taking an Olympic Redshirt at Princeton during what would be his senior season, was a 2019 U23 World Team member and Nielsen is a 2018 U23 World Team member. Nielsen finished eighth at the 2019 Thor Masters.
The final two wrestlers rounding out the U.S. group are Tommy Brackett (Eads, Tenn/NMU-OTS) and Spencer Woods (Marquette, Mich./New York AC/NMU-OTS). Brackett and Woods are both in their second years at Northern Michigan University and will be competing at 77 kg. Last year, Brackett finished 15th at 87 kg at this tournament, while Woods finished 13th at 82 kg. In November, Woods finished runner-up at the Bill Farrell International.
Action will begin at 4:00 pm local time next Friday.
