An up-and-coming program reached a new height, an old No. 1 became a new No. 1 again and the pack of trophy contenders went through another reshuffling this week in the latest edition of the Trackwrestling Division I Rankings presented by Resilite.
The return of three-time All-American Matthew Kolodzik boosted Princeton up to No. 8 in the team rankings — the highest the Tigers have been in the four-year history of the Trackwrestling Rankings. Kolodzik makes his season debut in the rankings at No. 7 after abandoning plans to take an Olympic redshirt.
Meanwhile, Wisconsin inched closer to one of the four trophy spots, thanks to Seth Gross’ return to the top spot at 133 pounds. Gross started the year ranked No. 1 at 133, then lost and regained the top spot in December and wrestled the top ranking away from Penn State’s Roman Bravo-Young after defeating the Nittany Lion on Friday in Madison.
Iowa continues to pace the field with 130 projected NCAA advancement and placement points. Penn State is second with 81, followed by Ohio State (72.5), Arizona State (52.5), Minnesota (52), Wisconsin (50), Northwestern (44.5), Princeton (42.5), Oklahoma State (42) and Nebraska (40.5).
The Trackwrestling team rankings are based strictly on the number of advancement and placement points each squad would accumulate if its wrestlers finished in those ranking slots at the NCAA Championships. Top-ranked wrestlers earn 20 points, followed by 16 for second, 13.5 for third, 12.5 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 9 for sixth, 6.5 for seventh, 5.5 for eighth, 2 for spots 9-12, 1.5 for spots 13-16 and 1 for 17-25. Team dual outcomes are not factored into the team rankings.
The Trackwrestling rankings go out to 33, representing the number of wrestlers who will qualify for the NCAA Championships at each weight class.
The rankings are coordinated by David Mirikitani and Mark Ostrander.
