Inaugural Battle on the Banks Set for Saturday
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Several members of Rutgers wrestling will compete in the inaugural Battle on the Banks wrestling event on Saturday, Jan. 2 at 5 p.m. ET. The exhibition card, hosted by the Scarlet Knights Wrestling Club (SKWC) in conjunction with Mobbin Media and Rokfin, features some of the top amateur wrestlers from across the country and will be available to stream with a Rokfin subscription. The event is closed to the public.
Editor's Note: An undercard of youth matches will begin at 3:00 p.m. ET
Current Scarlet Knights Sammy Alvarez, Christian Colucci, Joseph Grello, Billy Janzer, Robert Kanniard, Connor O'Neill, John Poznanski, Dylan Shawver, Sebastian Rivera and Michael VanBrill are all scheduled to wrestle on Saturday, as RU continues to gear up for the 2021 season.
It will be the first opportunity for fans to see Rivera compete since he captured the 2020 Big Ten title this past March at the RAC. He will face three-time NCAA qualifier Shelton Mack, who produced 84 career wins at Pittsburgh and is currently an assistant coach at Columbia. Alvarez will take on 2020 NCAA All-American Michael Colaiocco (UPenn), while Janzer will face 2018 Pennsylvania state champion Josh Stillings (Drexel). Colucci, who was granted a sixth year of eligibility, will wrestle two-time NCAA qualifier and No. 20 Ethan Laird (Rider).
Pegged as high as No. 10 in this year's preseason polls, Rutgers produced five NCAA qualifiers last season, the sixth consecutive year the program had five or more qualifiers for the championships under head coach Scott Goodale. Alvarez, Janzer, VanBrill, Nicolas Aguilar (125), and Jordan Pagano (197) were all set to compete at the 2020 NCAA Championships in Minneapolis before the tournament was canceled due to COVID-19.

In this match up we will see incoming Rutgers freshman and 2019 New Jersey State Champion Connor O'Neill up against Pennsylvania RTC athlete, Evan Barczak! Evan is coming off a recent 5th place finish at the 2020 U23 Nationals in Omaha, Nebraska.
Match 4: Christian Colucci (SKWC) vs. Ethan Laird (Bronc WC)
A classic Scarlet Knight vs Bronc battle!! Both of these guys are projected starters at HWT for Rutgers and Rider in the upcoming season. Guaranteed excitement coming form the coaches corner with this match-up. Colucci is a two-year starter for Rutgers at HWT, while Laird is a two-time NCAA Qualifier for the Rider Broncs.
Match 5: Robert Kanniard (SKWC) vs. Parker Kropman (PRTC)
Rob Kanniard is heading into his redshirt freshman season at Rutgers University. Rob was a 2019 NJSIAA State Champion and looks to do some exciting things for the Scarlet Knights. He will be going up against Pennsylvania Regional Training Center's Parker Kropman. Kropman is a NCAA Qualifier for Drexel University and looks to build on that in his senior season. Recently, Kropman finished 7th place at the 2020 U23 Nationals in Omaha, Nebraska.
Match 6: Dylan Shawver (SKWC) vs. Antonio Mininno (PRTC)
Highly sought after recruit, Dylan Shawver, will look to gain momentum moving into his freshman campaign at Rutgers University. He will be facing former New Jersey State Champ and 2020 NCAA Qualifier for Drexel, Antonio Mininno. Expect fireworks from these two!
Match 7: Joseph Grello (SKWC) vs. Quentin Perez (Navy-Marine Corps RTC)
Another great match up here! Navy-Marine Corps RTC athlete, Quentin Perez, is coming off a recent 3rd place finish, at 74kg, at the 2020 U23 Nationals in Omaha, Nebraska. Perez will be met by Scarlet Knights Wrestling Club's, Joe Grello. Grello is a two time NCAA Qualifier for Rutgers University and heading into his senior year.
Match 11: Sammy Alvarez (SKWC) vs. Michael Colaicco (PRTC)
Last season as a freshman, Colaiocco was named an 2020 NWCA All-American at 125lbs for UPenn. On January 2nd he will represent the Pennsylvania RTC where he will face Sammy Alvarez. Alvarez was also named a 2020 NWCA All-American for Rutgers University.
Match 12: Sebastian Rivera (SKWC) vs. Shelton Mack (NYCRTC)
We are excited about this as it is one of our highlighted match-ups! Shelton Mack is currently training to make the United States World and Olympic teams, and he most recently placed fourth at the 2019 World Team Trails at 61kg. Sebastian Rivera is a three-time NCAA Division 1 All-American and a two-time Big Ten Champion. This will be exciting for Rutgers fans as it gives them an opportunity to catch Rivera wrestling under the Scarlet Knights Wrestling Club.
