CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY, Switzerland (August 5) -- The United World Wrestling Executive Committee (EC) held a virtual meeting today to review the impact of COVID-19 on the future of the Cadet and Junior European Championships.
Due to the ongoing pandemic the EC voted to cancel all events planned for September and October, including the European Cadet Championship scheduled for 5-11 October in Poland and the European Junior Championship planned on 19-25 October 2020 in North Macedonia.
"We will continue to monitor the worldwide response to the pandemic," said United World Wrestling president Nenad Lalovic. "We take seriously the responsibility to care for our athletes safety and health. When we have confidence they can compete with success we will wrestle again."
The EC will meet in the next month to further discuss the 2020 calendar and analyze next steps.
Editor's Note: What the UWW Executive Committee did not decide was the status of three major events that are still on the calendar, the U23 World Championships in Finland in November, as well as the Junior World Championships and Senior World Championships in Serbia in December. These three events could have an impact on the USA Wrestling schedule this fall. Based upon today's announcement, a decision on whether these events are held may not come until the next Executive Committee meeting in September.
