Coming off a silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games, Matt Lindland bumped up from 76 kg to 85 kg. The move proved to be a good decision, as Lindland took silver at the 2001 World Championships.
In the semifinals, Lindland, who is currently the National Greco-Roman Head Coach, defeated Alexander Menshikov of Russia. Menshikov was a World champion in 1998. In 2002, Menshikov returned to the World finals and took silver.
Lindland retired from the sport after this tournament and pursued a successful career in mixed martial arts before taking the reins of the U.S. Greco program in 2014.
