Tokyo watch for Thursday: China and Japan add two more qualifiers, five nations have four qualifiers

NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan – USA Wrestling is keeping a running score of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic qualification process, as the 2019 World Championships continue in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan this week.


The 2019 World Championships serves as the first qualifying event for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan in the 18 Olympic weight classes. The top six place winners in each of the Olympic weights will qualify their nation for the Olympic Games at that weight.


On Wednesday, there were two Olympic weight classes in women’s freestyle completed: 57 kg/125.5 lbs. and 76 kg/167.5 lbs. China and Japan were able to pick up an Olympic berth in both of these weight classes.


For the 10 Olympic weight classes completed by Thursday (6 in Greco-Roman and 4 in women’s freestyle), there are five nations with four total Olympic qualifiers at this time: China, Germany, Japan, Kazakhstan and Russia.


The United States got its first Olympic berth, when Adeline Gray won the gold at 76 kg in women’s freestyle.


Friday is the conclusion of four more Olympic weight classes, the final two in women’s freestyle (62 kg and 68 kg) and the first two in men’s freestyle (57 kg and 65 kg).
