BUDAPEST, Hungary – Macey Kilty ended her first U23 World Championships with a silver medal on Thursday night, falling in the 68 kg final in Budapest, Hungary.
Kilty had a tall task in front of her as she faced three-time Junior World champion and three-time Cadet World champion Masako Furuichi of Japan in the gold-medal match.
Furuichi, who won a bronze medal at the Senior World Championships earlier this year, scored first with a takedown from a single. Kilty responded moments later with a takedown of her own, countering a Furuichi shot.
The six-time World champion then took a 4-2 lead into the break with a double near the edge of the mat.
In the second period, Kilty held Furuichi to only one other takedown. However, Kilty was dinged with a caution and one which led to an eventual 7-2 lead for the Japanese wrestler.
While she lost in the finals, Kilty recorded the highest finish by an American women’s freestyler at the event and claimed USA’s third overall medal at the U23 World Championships. (Last year, the United States won two bronze medals in women’s freestyle.)
Kilty added to an already impressive resume, which includes a 2018 Cadet World title, two Junior World silver medals and a 2016 Cadet World bronze. This was her second World finals of the year as she also advanced to the Junior World finals in August.
After the second day of women’s freestyle action, the USA is in fifth place with 42 points. Ahead of the United States is Japan, China, Ukraine and Canada.
Competition continues Friday at 10:30 a.m. (4:30 a.m. ET) live on Trackwrestling. Follow @USAWrestling on Twitter for live updates.
