Hafizov wins bronze medal in Greco-Roman at CISM Military World Games in China

WUHAN, China – SGT Ildar Hafizov (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) won a bronze medal at 60 kg/132 lbs. in Greco-Roman on the third day of the wrestling action at the 7th CISM Military World Games on Tuesday. The CISM Military World Games is a multi-sport event featuring the world’s top military athletes.
Hafizov finished with an impressive 3-1 record against a strong field, including an 8-0 technical fall victory over 2018 Junior World silver medalist Tigran Minasyan of Armenia in the bronze-medal bout.
He started his tourmament with two strong wins. Hafizov opened with an 11-0 technical fall over 2018 African champion Abdennour Laouini of Algeria. In the quarterfinals, he stopped 2018 World bronze medalist Sailike Walihan of China, 4-1. He was defeated 7-1 in the semifinals by 2014 Youth Olympic Games champion and two-time Asian silver medalist Re Se Ung of North Korea. Re went on to win the gold medal.
This is Hafizov’s first CISM World Military Games, but he reached a medal match at the 2017 CISM World Military Wrestling Championships, when he finished fifth. Hafizov has competed in two Senior Worlds for the United States. Previously, competing for Uzbekistan before emigrating to the USA, Hafizov was a 2008 Olympian and three-time Senior World Team member.
Hafizov won the third CISM Military World Games medal for the USA, as SSG Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) won a silver medal at 50 kg/105.5 lbs. in women’s freestyle on Tuesday and SSG Max Nowry (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) won a bronze medal at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. in men’s freestyle on Monday.
Three other U.S. athletes competed on Wednesday. In Greco-Roman, SGT Ellis Coleman (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) placed eighth at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. Coleman opened with a 9-0 technical fall over Pang Jin Chol of North Korea. In the next round, he was edged by 2018 Pan American bronze medalist Joilson Junior of Brazil. When Junior failed to reach the finals, Coleman was not eligible for repechage.
The final two U.S. women’s freestyle wrestlers also competed. PFC Nahiela Magee (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 68 kg and SPC Randi Beltz (Colorado Springs, Colo. U.S. Army WCAP) at 76 kg. Beltz, competing up one weight class from her normal division, lost 4-0 to 2018 World silver medalist Koumba Larroque of France and finished in 10th place. Magee lost her only bout to 2018 Junior World bronze medalist Tetiana Rizhko of Ukraine, 2-0.
The final two U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers compete on Thursday, Cpt. Daniel Miller (Camp Lejeune, N.C./U.S. Marine Corps) at 97 kg and 1LT Toby Erickson (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 130 kg. Their first round draws are listed below.
Overall, the U.S. wrestlers have won three of the 14 medals won by American military athletes in all sports.
