Medeiros wins freestyle silver medal at Veterans Worlds; Hull, Humphrey, Early claim bronzes

TBILISI, Georgia - James Medeiros of Van Nuys, Calif. won a silver medal at 88 kg in men’s freestyle on the final day of competition at the 2019 Veterans World Championships.
Medeiros was pinned in the gold-medal finals by 2012 Olympic bronze medalist and 2010 Senior World bronze medalist Gabor Hatos of Hungary in 1:38. After Medeiros was placed on the shot clock, Hatos hit a four-point knee pick, putting Medeiros on his back where Hatos finished off the fall.
Medeiros had two strong victories on Sunday morning to power into the finals, beating Sebastian Ecklebe of Germany, 4-0 and Mukhamed Shebzukhov of Russia, 5-3.
It was Medeiros’ second medal of the 2019 Veterans World Championships, after claiming a Veterans World bronze medal in Greco-Roman on Thursday.
Capturing Veterans World bronze medals for Team USA on Sunday were Nicholas Hull of Indianapolis, Ind. (Div. A 62 kg), Jordin Humphrey of Monrovia, Calif. (Div. A 70 kg) and Gralan Early of Fort Wayne, Ind. (Div. A 70 kg)
Hull finished off his bronze-medal performance with a quick 10-0 technical fall over Gerhard Van der Merwe of South Africa. He opened his tournament with a 4-2 win over Koki Okawa of Japan, then was beaten in the semifinals by Kenta Fujimoto of Japan, placing him in a bronze-medal bout.
Humphrey had a strong 3-1 record in the tournament, securing a pin and two technical falls. His bronze-medal victory was a 10-0 technical fall over Manuel Wissel of Germany. Humphrey opened with a pair of dominant wins, pinning Tommaso Cilardi in 44 seconds, then securing 10-0 technical fall over Thomas Ferchland of Germany. He fell in the semifinals to Masanori Sakamoto of Japan.
It was the second straight year that Humphrey has won a Veterans World bronze medal in Div. A at 70 kg, along with his 2018 bronze.
Early had an impressive 4-1 record for the day, finishing it off with a throw to a pin over Teimurazi Kasoshvili of Georgia in the bronze-medal bout. Early started his tournament with two wins, a 10-0 technical fall over Serkan Sen of Turkey and an 8-2 decision over Steve Brylla of Germany. In the quarterfinals, he lost by pin to Mohsen Sameti of Iran, who pulled Early back into repechage by making the finals. Early beat Aslan Kaitov of Russia in repechage, 6-3, to qualify for his bronze-medal bout.
It was the final day of wrestling at Veterans Worlds, and all of the action was in Div. A in men’s freestyle. The USA entered six athletes on Sunday, and came home with four medals from this group of athletes.
During the six-day tournament, the United States finished with 22 medals, 15 in men’s freestyle and seven in Greco-Roman. Claiming a gold medal in men’s freestyle at Daniel Chaid of San Jose, Calif. at 130 kg in Div. E, the only Veterans World champion from the United States this year.
