KHASAVJURT, Russia – The USA put together a solid day at the Continental Cup in Russia, winning two medals on Saturday and advancing two other wrestlers to Sunday’s finals.
Claiming medals on Saturday was Thomas Gilman at 57 kg and Evan Henderson at 65 kg.
Gilman, who lost in the first round in Friday’s action, bounced back to win a bronze medal with a win by forfeit in repechage and a 6-0 decision in the medal match.
Henderson went 3-0 yesterday to secure a spot in the 65 kg finals. For gold, he met Russia Nationals runner-up Ramazan Ferzaliev but fell short to finish the tournament with a silver medal.
Two other athletes competed in bronze-medal matches and came away with fifth-place finishes, including Zach Sanders at 57 kg and Mekhi Lewis at 74 kg.
Yesterday, Hayden Zillmer and Ty Walz completed competition at 97 kg. Zillmer turned in a silver performance, while Walz finished with bronze.
Heading to Sunday’s finals are 2016 Olympian Frank Molinaro at 70 kg and two-time Final X runner-up Isaiah Martinez at 79 kg.
Molinaro navigated a tough field, winning four matches to get to the finals. Tomorrow, Molinaro will face Aznaur Tanaev of Russia, who won the Stepan Sargsyan Tournament and was third at the Ali Aliev Tournament earlier this year.
Moving up a weight class, Martinez competed at 79 kg, where he strung together three impressive wins. In the finals, Martinez will take on three-time Ivan Yarygin medalist and 2019 Russia Nationals runner-up Atsamaz Sanakoev of Russia.
USA Wrestling will update results as they become available.
