Medeiros wins Greco-Roman bronze medal at Veterans Worlds; Day 1 freestyle pairings set

TBILISI, Georgia – The final day of Greco-Roman at the Veterans World Championships concluded on Thursday, and all three U.S. entries in Div. A reached bronze-medal bouts.
Winning a bronze medal for the USA at 88 kg in Div. A was James Medeiros of Van Nuys, Calif.
Medeiros scored a gritty 2-1 victory over Nikolai Trishin of Russia in the finals. In the first period, Medeiros was hit with a passivity penalty point and placed down. Trishin scored three gut wrenches on top, but the U.S. corner challenged. After a review, the six points were taken away because Trishin used legs to get the turn, so he led 1-0.
In the second period, Medeiros turned up the pressure, scoring two passivity points after he broke a tired Trishin who could not keep up with a pace. Trishin was penalized twice giving Medeiros the 2-1 win.
Medeiros won his opening match in a 10-0 technical fall over Bakhtzhan Nuradinov of Kazakhstan. After losing 7-3 to Temirlan Abishev of Kazakhstan, Medeiros was pulled back into repechage after Abishev reached the finals. Medeiros shut out Juan Nel of South Africa, 5-0 in his repechage bout. Medeiros was an impressive 3-1 for the day.
Placing fifth after losing bronze-medal bout were Jordin Humphrey of Monrovia, Calif. at 70 kg in Div. A and Milton Yates of Washington, D.C. at 78 kg in Div. A.
Humphrey lost a wild 10-8 decision to Mamuka Chochua of Georgia in his bronze-medal bout. He was beaten in his first match by Amir Foroudi of Iran, who went on to win the gold medal.
Yates opened his tournament with a strong 8-0 technical fall victory over Joszef Varga of Hungary. He was then pinned by Dumitru Popov of Moldova, who went on to win the gold medal. Yates was pulled back into a bronze-medal bout, where he fell to Aleksandre Tabatadze of Georgia, 8-0.
The United States finished the tournament with seven Veterans Worlds Greco-Roman medals, two silver medals and five bronze medals. Claiming silver medals for the United States were George Porter of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. at 130 kg in Div. C and Joseph Raia of South Elgin, Ill. at 62 kg in Div. C.
Capturing bronze medals for Team USA were Medeiros, plus Robinson Prebish of Richmond, Va. (Div. C at 62 kg), Michael Madry of St. Petersburg, Fla. (Div. D at 62 kg), Erik Hinckley of Lansing, Kansas (Div. D at 100 kg) and Matthew Nowak of Johannesburg, Mich. (Div. D at 130 kg).
Team USA finished fifth in the team standings with 35 points. Iran won the team title, with Sweden in second and host Georgia in third.
There are 20 U.S. Veterans freestyle wrestlers scheduled to compete on Friday, in either Div. B or Div. E. The first round pairings for these athletes are listed below.
Among those competing Friday are three past Veterans World champions.
Five-time Veterans World freestyle champion Brad Swartz of Puyallup, Wash., who will compete in men’s freestyle in Div. E at 78 kg. Swartz won his Veterans World freestyle gold medals in 2004, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Competing at 130 kg in Div. E is Daniel Chaid of San Jose, Calif., who was a Veterans World freestyle champion in 2000. Wrestling in Div. E at 88 kg is Petros Petrosyan of Los Alamitos, Calif., who won a Veterans World freestyle title in 2016.
The event will be broadcast live in the United States on Trackwrestling. Tbilisi is eight hours ahead of the U.S. Eastern time zone.
