For the second straight week, Iowa inched closer to Penn State in the pursuit of the No. 1 spot in the Trackwrestling Division I Tournament Rankings presented by Resilite.
The Hawkeyes, the only team with a wrestler ranked in the top 12 at each weight, are now within 4.5 points of the top-ranked Nittany Lions.
Penn State checks in this week at 112 points, followed by Iowa (107.5), Ohio State (61.5), Nebraska (59.5), Arizona State (55.5), Wisconsin (52.5), Northern Iowa (46.5), North Carolina State (45.5), Iowa State (42) and Oklahoma State (36.5).
Penn State's 60-dual win streak came to an end Friday night at Arizona State while Iowa handled Iowa State 29-6 on Sunday, but those two outcomes produced only subtle shifts near the top of the individual rankings. Penn State's Kyle Conel dropped from No. 8 to No. 13 at 197 after losing to previously unranked Kordell Norfleet of Arizona State. Iowa's Kaleb Young dropped from No. 2 to 3 at 157 after falling against Iowa State freshman David Carr. Iowa freshman Nelson Brands replaced teammate Cash Wilcke in the 184-pound rankings this week and debuts at No. 9.
Brands was part of a 184-pound shakeup inside the top 10. Northern Iowa's Taylor Lujan moved up three notches to No. 2 after handling Nebraska's Taylor Venz on Sunday and North Carolina State freshman Trent Hidlay moved up five spots to No. 5 after taking out Cornell's Ben Darmstadt and Binghamton's Lou DePrez on Saturday.
The Trackwrestling team rankings are based strictly on the number of advancement and placement points each squad would accumulate if its wrestlers finished in those ranking slots at the NCAA Championships. Top-ranked wrestlers earn 20 points, followed by 16 for second, 13.5 for third, 12.5 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 9 for sixth, 6.5 for seventh, 5.5 for eighth, 2 for spots 9-12, 1.5 for spots 13-16 and 1 for 17-25. Team dual outcomes are not factored into the team rankings.
The Trackwrestling rankings go out to 33, representing the number of wrestlers who will qualify for the NCAA Championships at each weight class.
The rankings are coordinated by David Mirikitani and Mark Ostrander.
