ST. PETERSBURG, Russia – Chris Anderson (Houston, Texas/Williams Baptist), won a bronze medal at 67 kg, the top U.S. performance at the S.A. Lavrikov Cup this weekend.

Anderson finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, beating Victor Koshelov of Russia, 2-0 in the bronze-medal round. He won his opener, a 9-4 decision over Roman Kuhn of Russia. In his second bout Anderson battled hard in a 7-0 loss to 2016 Olympian and 2007 Junior World champion Ibragim Labazanov of Russia.

"Chris Anderson won the bronze medal and looked good. He hung in there with Russian Olympic Team member, Labazanov, and kept fighting the whole match,” said U.S. coach Jay Antonelli.

Anderson is a two-time U.S. Open placewinner, taking seventh in 2016 and eighth in 2019.

Three other U.S. wrestlers reached bronze-medal matches, where they were defeated, and finished fifth: Erik Spence (Elk Grpve, Calif./NMU-OTS) at 67 kg, Riley Briggs (Brentwood, Calif./NMU-OTS) at 72 kg and George Sikes (Fort Pierce, Fla./NMU-OTS) at 87 kg.

"Although we always wish for better results, the main focus has been to get in some foreign matches, which we did. Riley Briggs came out strong and surprised a couple of his opponents with his explosiveness. We still have a long way to go in parterre, but the guys did make some good adjustments which showed improvement,” said Antonelli.

The Lavrikov Cup is part of a full tour, which included a dual meet and training camp.

“The following day, we had a dual against our host St Petersburg club which drew a large crowd and turned out to be a great event. Although we got shut-out, we did have some bright spots. Riley Briggs wrestled veteran Karill Babchuk, and lost a tight match after Riley took him down for four points early in the match. Conner Karwath at 130 executed two nice throws for four but couldn't hold his lead and ended up losing by one point. This week we will continue training with our host club here and gain as much knowledge as we can,” said Antonelli.
