New York, N.Y. – In the only American vs. American match-up of the women’s freestyle finals, Victoria Anthony topped Erin Golston, 5-0, to take gold at the Bill Farrell International.
Anthony was in on Golston’s legs several times during the first period, nearly converting two takedowns but settling for step-outs instead to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
The second period was more of the same. Anthony nearly scored a takedown on the edge of the mat, picking up another step-out to make the score 3-0. At the buzzer, Anthony put Golston on her back off a desperation shot to pick up a final two points and close out the match.
Anthony, a 2017 World Team member, was already qualified for the Olympic Team Trials, which will take place in April, but felt it would be beneficial to compete anyways.
“I came to get matches, to get work in. Like working on the things that I’m working on in practice but in match speed basically with match stress,” she said.
Being the highest medalist from the U.S. not already qualified, Golston earned a spot at the Olympic Team Trials. Also punching their tickets were Areana Villaescusa at 53 kg and Alexandria Glaude at 68 kg.
Villaescusa, who is currently No. 3 at 55 kg, defeated No. 2 at 53 kg Katherine Shai, 10-0, in the third place match to earn the bid. Glaude, the current No. at 2 68 kg, defeated Skylar Grote, 6-2, to earn bronze and the Trials berth.
The other American in the finals, Haley Augello fell by fall to Yuka Yago of Japan at 53 kg. Yago is now a three-time Bill Farrell champion. Augello, a 2017 World Team member and 2016 Olympian was already qualified for the Trials.
The outstanding wrestler award was given to Canada’s Erica Wiebe. A 2016 Olympic champion, Wiebe defeated Aline da Silva Ferreira of Brazil, a 2014 World silver medalist, in the finals.
Men’s Freestyle action will resume tomorrow at 9:30 am and be streamed on Flowrestling.
