New York, N.Y. - Erin Golston was the sole women’s freestyle wrestler to qualify for the Olympic Team Trials in the opening session of the Bill Farrell International. The highest American medal winner at each weight class that is not already qualified earns a bid. After tonight’s medal round there will most likely be several more Olympic Team Trials qualifiers.
Golston advanced to the finals with a 5-5 decision over Amy Fearnside, who is No. 3 on the National Team. In the finals she will face Victoria Anthony, who is already qualified due to being a 2017 World Team member. Anthony earned two technical falls en route to the finals.
The other American to make the finals was Haley Augello at 53 kg. Augello, a 2016 Olympian and 2017 World Team member, was already qualified for the Olympic Team Trials. In the semifinals, she knocked off National Team No. 2 Katherine Shai. In the finals she will face two-time Bill Farrell champion Yuka Yago.
57 kg is the first all-international final where 2018 U23 World champion Alexandria Town will face Alma Valencia of Mexico. Valencia is currently training with the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club.
At 62 kg, Emma Bruntil pulled an upset when she defeated 2018 World bronze medalist Mallory Velte, 3-1, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Bruntil fell to Yui Sakano of Japan, 5-4. Sakano will face Lais Nunes de Oliveria of Brazil in the finals.
68 kg is an all-Canada affair where 2018 World silver medalist Danielle Lappage will face 2018 Pan American champion at 72 kg Veronica Keefe.
In a high profile match, 2016 Olympic Gold medalist Erica Wiebe of Canada will face 2014 World silver medalist Aline da Silva Ferreira of Brazil.
Action will resume at 6:00 pm and can be streamed on Flowrestling.
