SASSARI, Italy – A team of NCAA Div. III wrestlers from Case Western Reserve University and John Carroll University competed in men’s freestyle at the Sassari City Matteo Pellicone Memorial International, a UWW Ranking Tournament.
The USA did not enter any of its National Team athletes in this event, and this tour team of college student-athletes were able to compete, facing many of the top wrestlers in the world.
The two universities joined as one team to represent Cleveland-Ohio-USA. In addition to competing at the tournament, they also trained at the Italian Olympic Training Center.
Three athletes from this tour team were able to place in the top five of their weight class, Alec Hoover (Colbert, Wash./CWRU), who was fourth at 61 kg/134.4 lbs., Patrick Hebreard (Grand Rapids, Mich./CWRU), who was fifth at 57 kg/125.6 lbs. and Grant Robinson (Bexley, Ohio/CWRU), who was fifth at 125 kg/275.6 lbs.
Hoover went 1-2 in his pool competition, including a pin over Mohamed Al Amine Lakel of Algeria, to place third in his pool. He did not advance to the semifinals. However, one of the semifinalists was disqualified, and Hoover moved up from fifth to fourth in the final standings.
Hebeard and Robinson both lost matches to eventual finalists, and were pulled back into bronze-medal bouts, which they lost and finished fifth in their weight class.
The quality of the men’s freestyle division at the Sassari City tournament was very high, because of its status as a UWW Ranking Tournament.
The USA finished the event with two medals, a gold medal by Tamyra Mensah-Stock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC/OTC) at 68 kg in women’s freestyle and a silver medal by G’Angelo Hancock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 97 kg in Greco-Roman.
