Velte defeats Olympic medalist Malik, helping USA to 8-2 win at Beat the Streets LA’s Hollywood Wrestles Bollywood

LOS ANGELES – Eight U.S. women won their matches on Sunday night at the 5th Annual Beat the Streets Los Angeles Benefit and International Competition on Sunday night at the Wiltern Theatre.
At this year’s event, dubbed Hollywood Wrestles Bollywood, Team USA wrestled an international team comprised of members from India’s and Mexico’s wrestling federations. The Red, White and Blue won the event, 8-2.
One of the highlights of the dual came at 62 kg, where 2018 World bronze medalist and California native Mallory Velte defeated 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Sakshi Malik of India.
Velte and Malik traded takedowns in the first period, but it was Velte who led at the break, 2-2, on criteria. In the second period, Velte scored on a low-leg attack, but shortly after, Malik took the advantage on criteria, scoring a takedown on a double.
With less than 30 seconds left, Velte executed a foot sweep that was eventually awarded two points. With a late effort from Malik, Velte scored one more takedown on a go-behind to close out the match with an 8-4 win.
Team USA collected three pins throughout the afternoon, tallied by Whitney Conder at 50 kg, Forrest Molinari at 65 kg and Adeline Gray at 76 kg.
Conder, a four-time Senior World Team member, took on 2013 Junior World bronze winner Sheetal Tomar from India. After a slow start in the first period, Conder scored a takedown, eventually putting Tomar to her back for a pin at the 4:16 mark.
Another California native, Molinari, who was fifth at the 2018 Senior Worlds, picked up a first-period pin against 2009 Junior World bronze medalist Navjot Kaur at 65 kg.
Late in the first period, Molinari scored on a single leg and added three tilts before sticking Kaur in 2:53.
Four-time World champion Adeline Gray put an exclamation point on the event as the final match, taking on Sudesh from India. Gray came out quickly, collecting three takedowns with some exposure points to lead 10-0 when she finished off with the pin in 1:52.
2018 Senior World medalists Sarah Hildebrandt and Tamyra Mensah-Stock tallied wins on Sunday night, facing off against athletes from Mexico.
Wrestling at 53 kg, Hildebrandt, who won silver at the 2018 World Championships, put together an quick 10-0 technical fall against 2018 Pan American bronze medalist Mariana Diaz Munoz, scoring a takedown in the first 20 seconds. Hildebrandt tacked on four tilts to end the match in 1:13.
At 68 kg, 2018 World bronze medalist Mensah-Stock strung together four takedowns against Maria Garcia Bautista, who was fifth at 2018 University Worlds. Among her four takedowns was a four-point double scored off the whistle at a restart. Mensah-Stock finished with an 11-0 tech fall.
The other two wins from the USA came at 55 kg and 59 kg.
California native and fifth-place finisher at the 2018 Senior Worlds Jacarra Winchester was dominant at 55 kg, facing off against Pinki, a 2018 Yasar Dogu champion and eight-time World Team member for India. Winchester scored two takedowns in the first period and picked up one more in the final frame for a 7-0 shutout.
At 59 kg, two-time World silver medalist lit up the stage, hitting a five-point suplex against Sarita, a nine-time World Team member for India. Ragan also notched a takedown in each period en route to a 9-1 victory.
There were a pair of youth matches that opened the event. Winning those bouts were San Fernando’s Samantha Larrios and San Pedro’s Sydney Barrios.
